Peeved. Again. Apparently, the school's idea to encourage reading is to force it on us. We juniors have it rough, since we have to read Tuesdays With Morrie and Book Thief. In total, over 600 pages to read. And that's not all! Since I'm in English Honors, I have to read a third book, Brave New World. So, I have to read almost 800 pages of stuff that I can care less about in a two and a half month timespan. I've planned this final summer of freedom I have out already to where I have enough things that I want to do to actually go and do them, but not too much to turn me off and thereby wasting it.

Well, it is mostly playing video games, finishing my comic, increasing Photoshop skills, biking for maybe 100 miles (200 if it's a mild summer), maybe going to the community pool and swimming there, do an ultimate organization of my computer files, and quite possibly watch all the DVDs I have (10). I know it doesn't sound much, but this will be the last summer I will ever have off. I want to feel like I made the absolute best of it and have a blast doing it. I kind of doubt using a good portion of my time forcibly making myself read will be worth my time.

Things that matter to me > Things that matter to everybody else
Things that matter to, say, ramrod > things that matter to everybody else
Etc.

What I'm trying to say is that while the books aren't worth my time, I won't stop the people who actually want to read them, since its worth their time.

Also, ACLU is blocked from the school computers since it's an "Advocacy Organization". When I found that out, I was all WTF?

Oh boo hoo, just read it all in a day. If I can read a Harry Potter book for 5 hour periods at my age and my attention span then you should be able to do this easily.

Brave New World is a good book, and Tuesdays With Morrie's not that long. I haven't heard of the other one.

I take it you're not a member of the "I read books for fun!" club?

Man, I wished I could've done book reports throughout my entire school year...

But some people are more math/science oriented, while others are history/language oriented, then you have people who are in the middle.

I'm not in the middle, that's for sure. Give me all those books, I'll spend all summer dissecting them like your poor dead frog.

p.s. I see 'Brave New World' now I have the Iron Maiden running in my head over and over and over...

I love reading, but I hate book reports with a passion that burns with the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns.
Having to analyze ans over-analyze the plot, setting, characters, et cetera of these books completely mangles the entire reason that they were written: FOR PEOPLE TO ENJOY THEM.

Yeah, I'm a math/science kid.

The only book reports I've ever done are "stand up, write the name of the book, explain the basic premise". Easy.

Speaking of enjoyment - I wish I was into romance novels when I was in high school, if I had been in public high school. It would've been fantastic to analyze/over-analyze the lack-of-plot, the unrealistic settings, the over-dramatized characters, the idealistic sex... I would've adored seeing the look on my teacher's face.

This is me, as well. My mind just doesn't like focusing over the tiny details of the book, especially when I read as slow as I do.

In fact, I'd probably be better off reading a summary of the plot off of a place like SparkNotes and then scan through the book to find the information I need for the report.

I dunno. Wasting around 20 or 30 hours reading books I don't care about is a big waste of time in my book.

That means that you're dedicating approximately one of your seventy-six or so summer days on schoolwork. That's not too bad.

BULLFLOP!!
It's a SUMMER day!
Summer is not about school stuff (well, mandatory school stuff, anyway).

You should not have to dedicate ANY of your summer to school if you don't want to.

If I were president, I would ban summer reading lists. Literature is useless, anyway.

Do you really think that a doctor thinks about the Iliad during surgery?
Yeah. I thought not.

So, do you not like reading books at all, or only when the school tells you to do it?

I pretty much hate reading when forced to. Also, I hate doing anything when forced to.

It's just easier to place said object in my room and wait for me to read all the books on my own.

So-so. I have a science project I'm not gonna be able to get done but we aren't taking a Math final, English final, and the Spanish state test is optional.
