I'm IMing Homeschool and he has to do a "Top 10 Favorite Albums of All Time" thing for school. He actually haven't really listened to any album all the way through so he just picked his favorite songs and then wrote about the albums they were on. Lame! And I got to thinking, what about you guys? Personally, I don't think I'd be able to come up with TEN, but I'd definitely be able to come up with three: "Revolver" by The Beatles, "Pet Sounds" by The Beach Boys, and maybe one (or if I am stretching it two) by TMBG. Dunno which that'd be though. Oh, and perhaps "River of Dreams" by Billy Joel would make the list. Probably up higher since I don't like some of the songs on it very much. But it's awesome. Oh, and The White Album would also make the cut. Definitely. So that makes, uh, 5-6 right there. Maybe I'll have a whole ten of 'em when I'm 20 or something. Oh, and "Dream of the Blue Turtles" by Sting. Definitely. So wow more than I thought! I'll see if I can come up with a whole ten later. EDIT: I have them all, plus a couple of runners-up. I'll post the list later today or probably tomorrow. |

Here's the aforementioned 10 albums I haven't heard all of: 10. Hip To the Javabean - Lemon Demon 9. The Kingston Trio - The Kingston Trio 8. Automatic For the People - R.E.M. 7. Odelay - Beck 6. Recovering the Satellites - Counting Crows 5. All That You Can't Leave Behind - U2 4. They Might Be Giants - They Might Be Giants 3. Apollo 18 - They Might Be Giants 2. Lincoln - They Might Be Giants 1. Flood - They Might Be Giants And just to reinforce how lame I am, I don't even own any of those albums. My dad owns two of them, though. |

Compilations do not count. GTFO.  Believe me, if they had counted, I would have included the Billy Joel or Paul Simon collections I have. BUT THEY DON'T. So I didn't. Nyah. D< Actually, perhaps I'm being too harsh. I think whether compilations count really depend on your point of view. For me, though, I don't think so. But whatever floats your boat, Disk. |

Yeah, I buy compilations because it is generally easier to get a specific band's good music instead of having to pay for several albums. I'm just gonna dive right in and spitball on this list. Just off the top of my head. I might make some edits or post a new list if I feel some other albums are more deserving. But anyways, in no particular order... 1) Lateralus - Tool 2) None Shall Pass - Aesop Rock 3) Back In Black - AC/DC 4) Nevermind - Nirvana 5) Discovery - Daft Punk 6) The Colour and the Shape - Foo Fighters 7) Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine 8) Age of Winters - The Sword 9) Music By Cavelight - Blockhead 10) Time Bomb - Buckcherry I chose these 10 albums because they're the albums that I can listen to the whole way through with full satisfaction. They're the albums that are stringed together nicely, they're the albums with great album artwork and they're the albums with all-around top-notch production. I could have chosen a Rush album or an Iron Maiden album as one of my top 10 favorite albums, but I don't think there's an Iron Maiden or a Rush album in which every song is just as good as the one that precedes of follows it. See what I'm saying there? Ah whatever, you don't care. This isn't my top 10 favorite albums fer definites though. I'm still undecided. |

Then I will add the others. As much as I love the ones above, they took some time to grow on me, while I liked the ones below straight away. Liking Dookie is fine while liking American Idiot is a crime against music, correct? K, ten favorites and explanation. In order of oldest to newest. 1967 (Best year in music): The Velvet Underground & Nico Perfect album and influential to nearly everything else I listen to. Also 1967: The Piper at the Gates of Dawn by Pink Floyd It's not Pink Floyd without the Barret man. 1979: London Calling by The Clash It's very creative and a great variety of styles. None of their albums after this are any good; however. 1984: Zen Arcade by Husker Du Second verse same as the first. Original and enjoyable. Although there are good albums by them after this one. 1988: Surfer Rosa by Pixies I think I may be one of the few people that thinks this is a better record than Doolittle. Doolittle's pretty sweet, too. 1994: MTV Unplugged in New York by Nirvana All of their music is great (I have all of their albums and Incesticide; I want With the Lights Out a bunch), but this one is my favorite. 1996: Pinkerton by Weezer Beautiful album, and again is their last good album. 2003: Elephant by The White Stripes =D 2003: Everything Goes Numb 2003 is a pretty decent year for ska. There actually two good albums (that I know of) during this year. This is one of them, and the other is Just One More by Mad Caddies. And the tenth slot is empty. I can't figure out what's deserving of this, there are so many possible options from this decade for me to choose from. Yeah, most of my tunes are recent. Sue me. There you go. Oh, and on a side note to Shwoo, I like American Idiot. 'Tis good, 'tis good. And most of you other people have rather wesome lists that I listen to like half of. I need to start listening to Neutral Milk Hotel. |

I think I may be one of the few people that thinks this is a better record than Doolittle. Doolittle's pretty sweet, too. |

10. Hüsker Dü - Zen Arcade Props to the above guy who mentioned this. Zen Arcade is just a pure classic. Got the original 2xLP, too. 9. Ramones - Rocket to Russia All the first four Ramones records were golden, but this one has "Teenage Lobotomy" and "Rockaway Beach" on it, and that's my favorite song from the Ramones. The early Ramones material, before it was all hijacked by the whole punk rock thing was great, like junkies attempting Beach Boys or something. 8. Velvet Undergound - White Light/White Heat Once again, it was a very hard decision. I Funk love Velvet Underground, but I'm down with the noisy experimentation on this record a bit more than what they did on the others. I don't think it's applicable, so I didn't put down the Peel Slowly and See box set of the Velvet Undergound, but I would since it's all their material. 7. Afrika Bambaataa - Planet Rock Basically every sucker DJ owes Bambaataa millions. Kraftwerk also owes Bambaataa millions, because who knew that anyone could actually make their stuff sound interesting? 6. Michael Jackson - Thriller This would be a perfect pop record if it wasn't for "The Girl is Mine." That song is terrible. Notwithstanding, though, everything else is gold. People go nuts over the title track, and it's good, but I'm a "Beat It" man. Michael Jackson's monsterous talent shines through best on Thriller, and I'm never one to appreciate virtuosity because that's usually something for boring white people, but he does it like no one else. 5. Black Flag - Damaged The quintessential angry, isolated, and ANGRY punk record which still sounds good and relevant even though it's like what, 26, 27 years old now? You believe Mr. Rollins when he's belting out "Funk GONNA PAY!" between verse and chorus on "Police Story." Black Flag is so antihero that even the excellent guitar work is still very thrashing and abrasive, especially on "Depression." 4. Against Me! - Reinventing Axl Rose The quintessential angry, isolated, yet still somehow optimistic and idealistic raw punk record. "Walking Is Still Honest" is my favorite song of all time, hands down. It's the ultimate drunk sing-along record, too. 3. Jawbreaker - 24 Hour Revenge Therapy It's very difficult to decide which Jawbreaker album is the best to pick for this list, especially when they all sound different, but I think I'll go with this one. By the way, if you don't like Jawbreaker: you suck, you never were a teenager, or you've never heard of them. The end. 2. Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) Wu-Tang Clan ain't nothing to Funk with. 1. Defiance, Ohio - Share What Ya' Got! I don't have to tell you why this is my favorite record. You can just listen to it, and decide for yourself. It was really hard to pick the top 10. I've got more like a top 400. |
