All right! I've been waiting months to hear some news on the DVD release! I'm trusting this is legitimate. ;)

If this is true (you seem like a non-liar SPIKE_BEBOP), I'm excited...even though I know I can't afford it (life stinks when you have no job...or allowance). I guess I'll just have to start skipping lunch and saving my lunch money

Edit: Whoa...I think this is my 100th post...I told myself it'd be something really important, so if you're not telling the truth, I'll have to go to you house and borrow your fondue pot...and never bring it back

SHouldn't there be extra tunes that wont be shown on the site? You know, like a few of the big ones. In fact, I think they should have a lot of new stuff besides just 3 emails and some behind the scenes. I'm still gonna get the DVD, no matter what, but don't you think they should have more than that?

Oh, are TBC registered in this forum?

Definitely. This is going to be awesome! But, like said before, the easter eggs will be hard. Maybe tBC will have three versions of each e-mail:
1. Regular, no nothin but the e-mail
2. Commentary, nothing else but the e-mail
3. Easter egg version, the e-mail, but the easter eggs are activated automatically.

Thoughts?

It's not hard to do easter eggs on DVDs. If I were to guess, I'd say they do it like the white rabbit on, er, some Matrix DVD, I don't recall which. That is, every time there's an accessible easter egg, a small icon pops up on the screen, and if you press a button it'll take you to that egg.

Hehe, they did the same thing on the Monty Python and the Holy Grail DVD. (my favorite one was where they showed the price of the mud in the "Bring out your dead!" scene)

Hi, everybody. Long-time lurker, first-time poster.

I was browsing the order form for Previews, which is Diamond Comic Distributors' catalog to comic stores. On the January listings, a Strong Bad Email DVD is listed. It's called "Strong Bad Email.exe" and is a 3-disc set. It retails for $29.99. Amazon doesn't have it listed yet, but see the order form for yourself: http://previews.diamondcomics.com/support/previews_docs/orderforms/cof.txt

Scroll to page 506, near the bottom.

A picture may be in the new Previews, available Wednesday at your local comic shop.

3 discs is approximately three times as many as I figured there would be in a H*R DVD release. I wonder how much of that disc space is taken up by extras.

I guess this means it's going to focus more or less solely on the sbemails then (at least given its title). Not that that's really a bad thing, but I still enjoy the other parts of the site as well.

crooow, welcome to the forum.

This is indeed some salient intel. But where does it say it'll be available in January? TBC said earlier this year that it would be a Fall release, and every line in that listing says "NOV04". What am I missing?

I guess it's just wishful thinking on my part -- I really don't want to have to wait until January.

Also, I don't think that the DVD will show up on Amazon. TBC currently only sell merchandise to small independent retailers:

Quote:
Want to get a leg up on the Big Guys? If you're an independent comic book, music/video store or other specialty shop, you can now offer Genuine Homestar Runner Merchandise to your customers!!

You won't find Homestar Stuff at Wide Mart, Bodacious Buys or Lackluster Music and Video, but If you want to attract customers with Homestar Stuff in your store, now's your chance! Read on and learn!

But I do have a theory. I think there's a good chance that the DVD will go on sale at the official store before Decemberween, and that it just won't be available to other retailers until January. I think they'd be crazy to wait until after the holidays to drop. Of course, it could be that they're just the victims of market forces beyond their control, but I can hope, at least.

January is the latest that the Strong Bad DVD will be sold. Items solicited in Previews usually ship 2 months after the catalog is published. "NOV04" refers to the November 2004 Previews. For DVDs, however, it depends. Sometimes the listing will say "estimated to ship in December 2004" or so. I'll look at my copy when it ships later this week and post the listing. I don't have a digital camera or scanner, so I'll just copy it verbatim.

Either way, I think that 3 discs for $30 is a fantastic deal.

I'm just wondering how you will activate the easter eggs...

Oh, and No_loafing, I stopped with the blue tint because a couple people (IJ for one) said the blue tint was hurting their eyes...

This was discussed in a different thread, but my theory is that it would work like in other DVDs, wherein when an extra scene/feature (i.e. easter egg) is available, an icon appears on the screen and you can press enter to access it.

It won't be as fun as, er.. holding down the tab key.. but it'll work.

Wow. Three DVDs?

A single-sided single-layer DVD-5 can hold 4.7 gigabytes (GB) of data.

Where are they going to come up with 14.1 GB of stuff? The biggest toon on the site is less than 2 MB.

These must be some of those space show DVDs I keep hearing about.

[Sneaky ninja edit: Oh. I just realized that they are going to have to convert from Flash files to some sort of DVD-playable files. I guess that conversion is going to add a whole bunch of data into the process.]

Okay, I'm merging this thread with the other DVD thread. MERGE'D!

I doubt they'll all be full to the brim. A quick googling reveals that a DVD can hold between 2 and 2.5 hours of DVD-quality video, depending on compression and extras. TBC aren't necessarily going to go for DVD-quality (since the toons could probably be compressed a bit more without a noticable loss in quality -- IANAVCE*), but still it means that the first 100 emails will take up about one disc, if not more. How long is the average e-mail? If the average e-mail is 2 minutes, that's 200 minutes (3 hours, 20 minutes) of video.

So maybe they'll put emails 1-50 in disc 1, 50-100 on disc 2, and lots of extras on the third. I'm really wondering what toons, apart from the emails, will be included. What I'd really love to see is all the video stuff, i.e. puppet stuff, the SNES thing, and the TMBG concert segments, in hi-res video, 'cause the copies in the site are artifact-tastic.

And what about the usual DVD extras? Will there be multi-lingual subtitles? Dolby digital surround sound (now that would be hilarious)? A link to the Wiki? Er..

Aside: Two projects I'd like to see on the Wiki are: 1) collecting running times for all toons and emails, and 2) release dates for everything. Obviously the latter would be necessarily incomplete for older stuff, but I think it'd be valuable.

*I am not a video compression expert.
