But, then again, it could revolutionize gaming and totally reinvent the industry, beating out every other console.

Or not.

Revolutionize the gaming industry, eh? With all the commercial license crap coming out these days, I think Nintendo should do the Messiah thing again. Seriously.
Wii was a bit of a shock for me the first time I heard it, but it really is starting to appeal to me now.

Hey yeah, revolutionize, that's exactly what they're tyring to do. Ooh, I know, they should pick a name that has to do with that!

And with the Nintendo Wii, there's practically no abbreviating, unless you're going to shorten it to W, but that has two more syllables in it. ;)

I was a little skeptical over the name, but Revolution is slowly starting to latch off my mind in place of Wii. It's short, pronounced "We", and has a funny spelling to it. It's not everyday you see two I's together in a word in a row, y'know.

Nintendo is trying to stay close to its gaming roots. Wasn't their first creation cards? In the year 1889? They were the ones who brought gaming back from the brink and was ahead with graphics for their first three systems when they were launched. They were the ones who were the first having a 64-bit console (Jaguar was meant to be 64-bit, but I think only 32 of them were actually used). The Gameboy, which was originally 4 shades of green was immensely popular. The DS is more popular than the PSP, and they made a gamble with it. Probably to make up for amecube, which wasn't that appealing on the outside, but does have good games *coughSUPERSMASHBROTHERScough*. Basically, they're trying luck. And for 117-so years, it worked. The possibly only innovative failure is the Virtual Boy. Think of SBZone. And eye damage. The point is that luck is on their side, and the only thing they want people to remember is the games. The unlucky part is the Disk systems they tried to make before Gamecube. One of them was revived by some people and today there's the PS3 coming out. I'm probably going around in circles now, but XBox relies on Microsoft, and without Microsoft, XBox is cooked, and Playstation will eventually be everything but games. Nintendo has been here before television, and will probably still be here after game consoles become anything but.

Besides, I'm thinking of a Spamalot game for Nintendo.

A Lynx is a cat that can claw your insides out. A Wii sounds like a small hamster that all of the other little hamster children ignored.

point taken lynx is a cool name, but wii?? Revolution was ok , but ...i'll just leave it at that

As for the name, as Wii, I'm pretty sure that, "We want to bring gamers together" thing, is them trying (but probably not working), so that the parents will think, next time they see it, that that game console dedicated a name to their gamers, thinking they care. Also, as for DG's comment, we have a step up on both systems, look at the prices, I made:

Xbox 360 plain: $400

Xbox 360 able to play Xbox games: $500 (Now that's just stupid, and a rip off)

PS3: Gonna be high, like, $600 or $700 dollars.

Revolution: $300 dollars or lower*

Now those are the prices I'm thinking, and, what sane person is going to spend $400 or $600 dollars on a game system, when there is a better, cooler, and more awesome...er game system for $300 dollars!

*Don't say like, "WELL TEHY SED TEH PRISE IS GUNNA B TIHS MOCH!1!!" for any of the game systems, I didn't check for prices. Yeah, scold me. :p

I'll tell you one thing. Nintendo's guys are geniuses. The entire frickin' Interweb is talking about the Wii. Talk about raising awareness.

EDIT: Also, guys: Not the "Nintendo Wii". Just "Wii".

Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

Heh, watch them show up at E3 and with a straight face say "Belated April Fools, suckers!" ;)

Yeah, that won't happen, but it'd be totally hilarious to see everyone's reaction.

Anyone who thinks all publicity is good publicity is in no way a genius. which is unfortunately the vast majority of all advertisement companies

And yet it is. But it isn't. But it is. It's a very complex thing to dissect, because the human mind and its machinations are so complex.

I tells ya one thing. I'd like to own one of each of the next-gen consoles. But on a soon-to-be college-student budget, only that wacky Wii has a snowball's chance!

I honestly don't see why the name matters. People care too much. If it were called the "Nintendo Sack of Crap", I'd still buy it, and it'd still be awesome.

Man, if it was called the "Nintendo Sack of Crap", I would want to buy it more. Any company who names their game system that HAS to be cool.

All this talk makes me wanna go take a wicked Wii.

Yes, I know that's an extremely immature pun, but I think the name deserves to have extremely immature puns thrown at it :p

Seriously. Don't even tempt me. Don't make me go all ninja on you with my nunchaku Wii controllers. *spinnything*

Not to be blunt, but can we PLEASE grow up, people? The jokes stopped being funny about fifteen minutes after initially reading the news.

You gotta be kidding me.

Nintendo releases a game system whos Controller has 4 buttons on the right, a 4-way directional pad on the left, a start, select, L, and R buttons. Sony does the same.

Nintendo Releases A system with that has an Analog Stick and a rumble pack. Sony does the same.

Microsoft Releases System that has a Navigation Button In the Center. Sony Does that same.

Nintendo Prepares to release a system that Has motion sensitive controllers. Sony does the same.

Seriously:

Screw Sony. They are the EbaumsWorld of Video games.

EDIT:

A prediction: Within the next few months Sony will rename the PS3 to the "Sony Puu"

...Someone YTMND that for me!

Impressive that Bill Amend got that out so soon. A comic strip typically has a four-week delay from the time the publisher gets it to the time it actually reaches the papers. (I checked Bill Amend's FAQ and apparently his lead time is about two weeks, which is still longer than it took for this strip to appear.)

This was on Zelda Blog; TML was live-blogging about the E3 Nintendo conference. Features that will be on Wii's Twilight Princess:

Quote:
Circle on centre of screen will show where you’re aiming the bow. Built into the remote is a speaker. The arrow will move from the speaker on the controller to the speakers on your TV to simulate travel.

You can pick things up with A and then fling them with a snap of the wrist.

TWO versions of Twilight, one for Wii and one for the ‘Cube, both on Wii’s launch day. Could the supreme preorder package of Zelda include both??

That is the coolest thing I ever heard. Ever.

This from the company that basically finished Star Fox 2, but didn't release it because they didn't want to have it coming out so soon before Star Fox 64.

It's the same game, dude, just for different systems. Like a game being released for Game Boy and for DS.

Point being? I would imagine the same game being released on two platforms would actually make less money than two different but related games on two platforms.
