They're pretty much similar. Unless you are familiar with the new Pokémon and have favorites that might be version-exclusive, it's not really important. Or you could just wait until Platinum comes out, but that could be a while.

Depends what legendaries, these are the current banned legends in standard play:

Arceus
Darkrai
Deoxys Attack Form
Deoxys Defense Form
Dialga
Giratina
Groudon
Ho-oh
Kyogre
Latias
Latios
Lugia
Manaphy
Mew
Mewtwo
Palkia
Rayquaza

Other legends like the birds and dogs and regis are perfectly legal.
As well, as long as you state before hand that the battle is anything goes or uber then you can use any pokemon you want.

How many (of the first 151) Pokemon can you name? I only got 51, but I could have got more if I tried harder!

@Susan: Whoa the Birds are good to go? Flippin sweet. I'd add Zapdos. I'd add him nine times.

Also, Ace, keep in mind that my advice was applied to D/P rules. In G/S, you don't have the physical-special split for moves, it's just based on type. So while Waterfall is a physical water move in DP, in GS it's special.
Tiers are just based on a Pokémon's stats and versatility. There are plenty of people who swear by under-used Pokés like Pidgeot, so use him if you want.

Look at the box and pick which cover Pokémon looks cooler, because that's the one you're getting. :)

The only way to get a Zapdos in Diamond or Pearl is to catch one in FireRed or LeafGreen and transfer it.

Its fairly easy to find someone to trade for one. Especially someone who can clone via emerald or GTS.

But cloning/hacking Pokémon is really lame.

Diamond it is then! I'll take my slightly less phallic-looking pokeymans, plox. Although... platinum sounds pretty spiffy if that's coming out later this summer...

I can see why hacking pokemon is but whats wrong with cloning? Its all done in game so its not like others cant do it as well. And it offers no advantage in battles.

@Capt. Ido Nos: Its probibly not coming out for some time in North America so just go with Diamond.

Cloning kills the concept of "rare." It does nothing to make battles worse, but it cheapens the fun of collecting.

In truth the only rare pokemon are event pokemon and shinies. Thats just the way it is.

So to get Gen 1 and 2 Pokemon in D/P I'd have to get FR/LG and trade them from there?

That sucks.

And to get Gen 3 Pokémon, you need Ruby or Sapphire or Emerald.

Except, that there are a couple of strange ones....
There are Pokémon that can be caught in the wild in Diamond and Pearl, but they'll only appear if a certain GBA game is inserted into the GBA slot. Example: Caterpie is catchable in Route 204, but only if FireRed is in your DS's GBA slot. Stupid and gimmicky, I know.

Collecting is fun until you realize that it's literally impossible to "catch 'em all" unless you got to go to a bunch of obscure one-time events. I'm all for eliminating that bull honkey.

There are, as DumDeDum said, wild gen 1 and 2 Pokémon in Gen 4 games. And you don't even need to have a GBA cart for some of them. However, getting all the gen 1 and 2 Pokés is extraordinarily difficult and requires three or four other games to do. You best bet is to trade with people online for most of them.
Taking a look at your team, all of them are available wild in D/P except Totodile and Zapdos. Vulpix needs a LG cart to be found in the wild.

I "caught em all" in Gen 1. I gave up on Gen 2 a long time ago. I wouldn't have even bothered beyond that.

Well there's no joy in "catching 'em all except for event Pokémon?" Or even just catching as many as you can? Heck, cheating for crap like Deoxys is more excusable. Or you could just go to the events when convenient.

But other Pokémon are different. If you battle someone and he pulls out a Milotic, you don't think, "Holy crap! That guy went through heck to get such a rare Pokémon!" Because it's easy to get them online.

Aaaah!

I was about to make a post telling you guys how many of 'em all I caught, but when I went to check my game, the Pokémon Pearl DS cartridge was not in its keep case...

I have no idea where it could possibly be. This is horrible, I had caught over 400 of the little guys...

Waaagh! Why could it have left there? I always put my DS games back in their cases when I've finished using them...

EDIT: Never mind... I've found it. It was misplaced inside Pokémon Diamond's case...

To get an actually good one is pretty rare. To get any actually good pokemon is rare. Other then that Im kinda confused as to what your saying here.

@Ace: Here is a list of unobtainable pokemon in D/P: http://serebii.net/diamondpearl/unobtainables.shtml

And here is a list of pokes that can only be caught with 3rd gen carts:
http://serebii.net/diamondpearl/gbapokemon.shtml
(Since you can catch gastly you can just evolve it....)

Thats roughly 80 that are unobtainable without 3rd gen games. And 80 pokes is really easy to get via trades since you only need 1 from each line.

No, I don't think that. I think "hmm, what do I have that can take that down?" Because that's what you do in a battle.

That list is a bit wrong: to my knowledge, there is absolutely no way to catch either Tangela or Tropius in D/P. That list doesn't include either of them.

What the heck, Pokémon Pearl!

I wanted to transfer some of my Pokémon from Ruby into Pearl, and it wouldn't let me. It said "You are either using a different DS, or the Nintendo DS's time has been altered. Set time in Pokémon Pearl to the time on your DS?"

Uhh... what? I never changed my DS's time. I switched off, checked the time on my DS with the time on Pokémon Pearl... and they were about one minute off. So I went back to that message and said "yes"... then it said "Changes to the time have been made. You may not transfer Pokémon until 24 hours have passed".

What the heck!?

Do you think that if you don't play a DS game with an internal clock for a while, it gradually gets desynchronysed with the DS? Maybe the internal clock memory in the game is slightly faster or slower than the DS's one...

Tangela swarms on top of Mt. Coronet, Tropius is in the safari zone after the national dex is obtained. You can use the binoculars to see which old pokemon will be there.

As for the clock, I don't know what happened but if you have more than 1 GBA cart you can just use the multi day transfer trick.

The DS's memory (your personal options on the DS itself) are stored within the battery of the unit, I believe. When I changed my battery one time, everything reset itself. I doubt that's what your situation is, but it could possibly be a battery issue.

I'm going to trade my Palkia for a friends Dialga today then trade them back just so I can have data for Dialga. I'm also hoping I can get my hands on A Skuropi and Gabite today. Then I will put one of them in the day care with my Ditto. Then I will get eggs for both Skuropi and Gabite. Then I can put Gabite and Skuropi in my Pokemon Ranch then evolve the Skuropi and Gabite from the eggs their final evolutions with my rare candies. Those are some of my plans for today.

What? Not true. I'm looking at my Pokédex right now. When I go to Tropius, it says "area unknown". And if I go to another Pokémon that appears in Safari Zone after you get the National Dex, like Shroomish, it highlights the Safari Zone.

I can't verify Tangela, though, because none of the swarmers have a location listed in the Pokédex. I can say, though, that they have never swarmed for me.

Thats because they only appear after you look through the binoculars before entering the park, and even then the chance of appearing is small.
