First off, if they're unreleased in the first place, then why the h-e-double hockey sticks can't I play it? Are you saying I have no right to own Starfox 2 and that I should delete it off my computer despite the fact Nintendo psyched us by not releasing an otherwise finished product? I mean, if Nintendo decides to polish it up and release it on Virtual Console it would be a different story.

Now, ROMs where the actual cart was released is a different. If I have X game, then I see nothing wrong with getting said ROM online. Or, in the case where I'm not sure if I want to buy said cart, I can try out the ROM and see if it's worth the overpriced amount.

Here are my morals on Emulation:

If I have a legal copy and am able to play it on a legal system, I see no reason why I can't play it on my computer.

I like to play a demo of a game before I buy it.

If they give me no way of obtaining it America, I'm going to play it anyways until they do.

Well, yeah, I was able to use PK Rockin when I beat them both. The problem I had before was that I would use it, but they'd use their super-powerful attack too. Then I'd input the command to heal (PK Lifeup or a Hamburger), but since Ness' speed sucks, they'd use their powerful attack again and I'd be dead.

You do have the text speed on maximum and you press buttons to get through the messages faster, right?

Other than that, sometimes it's better to just try to kill them before your HP runs out. You can execute a bash command a lot faster than a lifeup command, especially if you're already hitting the button to get through the text as fast as possible. If your HP hits zero after you got your last attack in and you beat the enemy, it'll bump your HP to 1 and give you the victory.

I beat Dredlocks guy and the enemies around there fairly easily, but before then I've gotten the sense that the differences between the regular enemies and the bosses are extremely huge.

Speaking of bosses, Mecha-Gorilla in Mother 3 is really hard

Bosses in EarthBound are pretty much a cakewalk, really... yeah, the first couple can throw you for a loop, but from now on you should be fine. In some places, the regular enemies are actually more difficult to deal with... the Trillionage Sprout comes to mind because of all the mushroom enemies in that area. If they get a mushroom on your head, there's nothing you can do except either try to deal with it (a potentially suicidal proposition) or get back to the hospital.

You can sit in the hot springs too, that'll remove the mushroom.

Really? Can't believe I didn't know that. Still gotta be annoying, though, since it takes a minute for the spring to do its magic.

Oh man, the plants in Peaceful Rest Valley are evil. They're way, way worse than getting a cold, even.

BTW, Peaceful Rest Valley was named Grateful Dead Valley in the original game. That alone should make EarthBound more awesome for you, Ace.

Ok, I really want to play this series but I really don't get it at all. Three questions.

Can I play Mother 3 without playing earthbound? Cause wikipedia says theres no continuity.

What are you all using to play it? An emulator? If so, link plz.

Aaand if it is an emulator is it completely translated?

Sorry, I'm really new to this whole thing. And emulator just emulates the system and a ROM is the game?

Earlier I said this:

furrykef wrote:
I don't know much about Mother 3, but from what I do know, yes, you definitely should play EarthBound first.

I'll elaborate: the main protagonists in Mother 3 do not appear in either of the other games, and on the whole they share little in the way of characters and locations. However, Mother 3's villain is also an important villain in Mother 2, and I think it'd be best to get to know him through that game first.

You don't need to bother. Mother 2 makes him stupid and he's awesome in Mother 3.

I played Mother 3 before EB and was not confused about anything.

I know you don't like EB, but even for you this is ridiculous. The villain is one creepy sonuvagun in Mother 2.

Ha ha ha! I can make neither heads nor tails of this comment.
Oh, wait. You meant him.

Well even if he's awesome in Mother 3 he's still an idiot.

Duh, but in EB he's pretty pointless until the end, and in M3 he's awesome when he shows up. Well, I guess he's pretty awesome in EB, but not for most of it.

By the way, I for one love Gigyas. I have always loved tragic villains.

I wasn't concerned about confusion so much as watching the character in question develop. And seeing him in Mother 3 is also a huge spoiler for EarthBound. You're not supposed to know that he's a bad guy when you first meet him (and, in fact, he's not a bad guy when you first meet him).

By contrast, Giygas appears in both Mother 1 and EarthBound, but you don't really get a sense of development with him, so it's not as important to play those two games in order (although the sheer superiority of EarthBound would probably make playing Mother 1 afterwards rather disappointing).

Gigyas goes through massive development between Mother 1 and 2...you just have too look into it a bit. The reason he is the way he is is because of the story you are exposed to in Mother 1 and the impact it has on his life.

The problem I have with "Villain" in Mother 2 is that he seems to go from "lol i'm annoying" to "lol I'm pure evil" with no real progression in between. Sure, he gets progressively more and more annoying but when he's revealed for what he is, I'm sure most people were like "lol wut".

If you've played through the Subspace in Brawl at all you know who it is because Brawl is basically one huge spoilerfest.
