For the stages, I agree with Ace.

I say smash balls on, they're hard enough to get and not encessarily instant kill. Dragoon on, too, since it's three parts. And, again, Ace's idea, some luck is fine. It's just one tournament and it's supposed to be fun, not serious.

What about hearts and tomatoes, though? Hearts are practically insta-save (and therefore equal to insta kill with only two players) and are easy to get. And tomatoes are rpetty close. I'd say get rid of those.

I'd be willing to ban hearts. Tomatoes, I dunno. Recovering 50% is actually a lot different than recovering 100%. Both of these seem to be extremely rare, anyway.


Did you misunderstand? I was using Kirby as an example. Cook sucks, it almost never gets kills. The items are cool sometimes but other times they're pointless.

Here's an idea of mine of how a tournament could work. It's based off of the Melee competitive scene, but with a few major changes (namely items).

Tournament rounds will be at least best 2 out of 3 to decide the winner of a particular match-up. Perhaps more for the final round. The first round is considered "neutral", with a random simple stage such as Smashville or Yoshi's Island, one that won't screw anyone over. Non-broken items may be on during the neutral rounds, we'll have to discuss that further.

The loser of the first round than gets to "counterpick" the second. He can select any stage he wants for his advantage (aside from a few stages we may agree to ban) and choose whether to have items on or off. Certain people work better with the random element of items, certain people work better without. Plus certain characters, expecially fast characters with few finishing moves like Meta Knight and Pit, benefit a lot from them.

If he loses again, he's out. If he wins, then its the other person's turn to counterpick the stage and items for the third deciding round.

Sounds fair? I think letting the individual people choose their settings within the tournaments will give a more enjoyable experience for everyone, and you'll have to adapt to win overall.


As for banning items, I agree that a few are simply too gamebreaking for any sort of competition, such as Heart Containers. I actually have a list from another tournament-planning webiste (not SmashBoards) of potential banned and safe items I could bring up and you guys want.

No, I was agreeing. Lucario's FS is insanely easy to avoid, and Kirby's FS is not a "guaranteed kill" at all.


I dig it. Giving the loser some kind of advantage will make things interesting.


Bring it up, but off the top of my head I think Golden Hammers, Stopwatches, and Heart Containers are the only really extreme gamebreaking ones.


Lower title for a month or two is a cool idea but you'll have to get it approved my Ram or Rad.

Also, the counter Pick thing won't work. This game works on a vote system, so there's only a 50/50 the counterpick will be chosen. I'm sure not all of us have instant messengers next to our Wiis, so we can't tell our opponents what stage we want. The only way it could work is if both people logged off, ran up to their computers, discuss the next stage, and both pick it. That would just make the tournament more painfully long and confusing than it already is.

Oh oh oh hey guys here's a CRAZIE idea: You can't use the same character twice in each match. You need to use a different character in each round. How awesome would that be.

I was thinking about this as well. Counterpicking is a good idea but it might make it more complicated than it needs to be.


That'd be pretty cool. It'd play to my strengths as I don't have a main, but am good with a bunch of people. But I think some people would get angry so I'll see what everyone thinks.

Maxim Tomato: 50% is a lot of damage, plus since it really comes down to sheer luck of who it spawns near, it's completely unnessecary
Dragoon: In free for alls with three or four people, yes, it is tough. But in 1v1s they just keep bouncing back and forth (and respawning, they'll never disappear for long) until someone inevitably gets it, usually right after killing his opponent so he can get another kill at 0%.
Star Man: True, it won't really break any matches, but turning the fight into a simple cat and mouse chase isn't very fun for the other player, and with no risk its just random of whoever it spawns near
Assist Trophies: Yeah, I really like these too. It's a shame that they're so broken.
Containers: The explosions of regular containers and boxes are very powerful and impossible to predict, they can really lead to some cheap KOs. The large marked explosive crates I'm personaly fine with though, they are obvious and take a lot of hits to break open.
Mega/Mini Mushroom: I once lost a match because a mini mushroom appeared from offscreen and got me before I could react. Though that is pretty rare, I suppose these could be legal
Bob-Ombs: The big problem is that they stages zoom in and out, sometimes parts are obscured. I have seen players die from bob-ombs sneaking up behind from offscreen while they were charging smash attacks and such, its a terrible way for a serious round to end

Other stuff:


Dang it, that's right. That sucks. Perhaps people could post their preferred settings and stage before the battle and they both could agree to use those depending on who wins? Not sure if that'd be too much trouble or not.


I mix up my characters often as well, but some people like to focus on a single character and get really good. It'd be mean to force someone away from their character like that for lolz.

Maybe it's just me, but I get a backfiring timer just as often as I get a normal one. It seems to be a calculated risk to take. For that reason, I don't think timers are broken enough to be banned.
Dragoon parts should be banned, but not because it is an instant kill - it's far from it once you've played more than a few brawls. No, I dislike them because as soon as one appears, you stop playing Super Smash Bros. and start playing Get The Other Parts. They are a huge time waster.

Meh, that's too bad. But I don't really care, besides it's not like I'm calling strategies and such cheap, just certain items' effects. Because really, some of them are, except in the most chaotic four player party circumstances. If I grab a Heart Container that spawned right under me in a serious battle and end up winning due to recovering 100%... it wouldn't really feel like much of a win. Same reason I don't attack people right after they randomly trip, where's the honor in that?

As for Lightning... well most status-related items have a ballance between reward and risk. Bunny Hood gives you super speed and jumping height, but it makes it much easier to fall off a cliff. Metal Hood makes you really heavy, for better or worse. Mega Mushrooms make you stronger and a bigger target. And stuff like lightning and timers share a risk at backfiring.

From my understanding Lightning and Mini/Mega Mushrooms were decided broken was because you could just touch them and take the benefit/risk without choosing too. It's not like with Bunny Hood or the Cloaking Device where you had to choose with the A button. This might actually be pretty rare with lightning, but relatively common with the mushrooms because of how they move around. No idea what the reasoning for the Timer was... at any rate, I wouldn't care much if these items were allowed.

I'd be content with only Heart Container, Maxim Tomato, Dragoon, Bob-Ombs, Superspicy Curry and Golden Hammer banned. Is that a good compromise? 43 out of 49 items isn't bad.
