EDIT: I split this off from RT, since it was cluttering it up. This is a thread for discussion on the MOTHER video game series. Many people in the US know it from it's second game Mother 2, known as EarthBound in the US. Mother 3 was released in Japan, but not in the US. It is amazing, and IMO, better than EB.

EarthBound

I just went from beating some animals senseless (no challenge at all, OHKO, etc) to getting beaten senseless by some skater punk. How is this sensible.

God, I love that game so hardcore.
I wish it was on the Wii shop channel so I didn't have to pull out my SNES anytime I wanted to play it.

When you have to grind for five levels just to beat the first miniboss, you have to deal with the combat whether you want to or not. The combat would be a lot more bearable if it had a combo system like Mother 3 or even the simple combos like in Mario RPG. But no, I sit here and hit "Bash" over and over again.

You all really need to take off your nostalgia goggles.

But don't worry, Ace, the combat does get better as you go on. I dunno if it ever gets as good as it does in Mother 3, since I've never played it. Probably not, but it does get better. Especially when you get Paula. Man, does she ever kick butt. Except Peaceful Rest Valley sucks. But other than that it's pretty decent.

I've never played Mother 3, but... Earthbound to me is amazing. It's freaking amazing. I've re-played it over and over again since I was a child and it first came out, to my adulthood, and it never gets boring to me.

edit: but yeah, no, I don't play it for the combat-system. haha

I don't think I would have liked Earthbound even if I had played it way back when.

Even at the time, Earthbound's system was extremely outdated. Most RPGs game evolved past the Dragon Warrior style.

Also, see, Ace, the reason most people play it is not because of the battles and stuff, it's because of the clever parody of other roleplaying games and the satirical wit.

Guarantee you'll laugh your butt off when you first encounter a hippie.

I see Earthbound as a clear-headed gamer of today. Considering I still play it today... It doesn't gather dust in my storage boxes.

As you all know, I played EB for about 20 minutes and got bored.

I played Mother 3 and was so enthralled by this wonderous piece of gaming that I beat it all (ending left me feeling more than a little down for more than one reason).

I'm trying to get through EB. I really am. But something irks me about having to deal with all these guys just so Frank doesn't totally annihilate me.

I KNOW the whole "focus" of the game is not supposed to be the battles. I get that. But the point is, whether I want to or not, the overpowered boss is making me fight his cronies over and over and over again, which boggs me down in combat and makes me focus on the battle system.

Oh, you know, speaking of nostalgia... I just bought the original Zelda through the wii (so I wouldn't have to dig out my old NES), and my partner started playing it. She'd never played it before, so I began cackling like a madman when she got the sword and she was like "... uh. Why is there no direction? Where the Hell do I go? This one old lady in the cave says to talk to the old man at the grave, what grave? Where do I go? Why am I at level 3??? WHAT DO I DO???"

She gave up after 5 minutes.

Side note: I actually... don't mind the EB battle system. It's not epic, or anything, but I can spend hours just holding down the button and battling. I'm one of those people who got Prince Poo's sword after like, 1,000+ starman battles... you know...

I'm such a geek.

OK, yeah, sorry Ace, but I thought you were talking about trying to beat Giant Step. That, I do have to admit, involves serious grinding. But Frank? Come on. Just put him to sleep with your PSI then attack him while he's asleep. Lather rinse repeat.

This EB walkthrough tells me to have PK Rockin' before I fight Frank, which was 5 levels above what I started this quest with (for some reason I was already at level 3).

The first Zelda (and second for that matter) sucks and I love the Zelda series more than anything. The series doesn't get good until Link to the Past.

No, see, I don't have the attention span for that. I need me some combos (one of the reasons I loved Mario RPG)

I'll admit I like the enemy design and whatnot (Skaterdude, Pogo stick guy, Hoola Hoop man are all kind of funny) but I get confused when they keep doing one damage then hit me for 10.

Mario RPG is epic.

And it's understandable if you don't have the attention span for the battle system, totally understandable.

Man, most NES games were complete stupidity.

I really doubt it's possible to beat Zelda 2.

My sister beat Zelda 2.

I got stuck because I didn't have enough Health or something...

That's because your sister is a person that has an immunity to painful torture.

You can't really get "stuck" considering you start out at the same place every freaking time you start the game.

EDIT: on the subject of Zelda 2 I couldn't beat it because I got completely lost and had no idea what the game wanted me to do. Also I died repeatedly

Is it just me or has every battle theme thus far been completely forgettable.
