Go to your profile and scroll all the way down to the avatar control panel. There you can upload an avatar or link to an off-site one. It's very simple and easy to use.

Of course remember, your avatar must be a jpg/gif/png no greater that 100x100 pixels and under 10kb.

1. Create a picture for yourself to use. MS Paint, Photoshop, Gimp (if it doesn't crash 50 trillion times), and other picture editing software is great for this.

2. Make sure you save your pic in a 100 x 100 pixel size, and less than 10 kb file size. JPG, PNG, and GIF are great for this.

NOTE: If you're too lazy to do it yourself, or just need some help THESE GUYS can assist you.

3. Upload the picture onto your Profile, which you can access through the link at the top of the page.

Hey Dids, when did you install GIMP and GTK? I'm using the latest release on vista (on vista) and it runs just fine.

Couple of years back. I have Photoshop now, so I don't need it anymore.

Yeah, I suppose recent versions are less glitchy.

I need photoshop, though. Looks amazing.

1. Check the file size of the image you're trying to link. If it's more than 100 x 100, and 10kb, then it won't work (and even if you could somehow force it, the admins would remove it anyway - larger avatars are forbidden). If the image is too big, you will have to save it to your computer, edit it down to correct sizes, then upload it from your machine.

2. Make sure that the image you're trying to link to is from a site that allows linking. Some sites will prohibit you from doing that. If so, then you'll have to copy the original pic onto your computer, then upload it onto the forum from your machine.

These are the only two things I can think that would prevent it from working.

What does the URL end with? It must end with .gif, .jpg (or a close variation), or .png, and it may not contain certain characters like ?. If you want to hotlink to a picture off Google images, you'll have to first click the thumbnail of the image, then click 'View Full Size', then take the URL. Then you'll probably get a valid URL that ends with one of those.

(If you are hotlinking to an image that is too big, it actually won't be able to tell, so you'll have to check the size yourself, but that doesn't sound like the problem here.)

Right click the image -> "properties"

Also, if the URL ends in ".jpg" it's a jpeg.

You know what, just post a link to the image here and I'll fix it for you.

To tell whether it's 100x100 or lower:

- If you just clicked on the image from the search page on Google Images, it will bring you to the page its located at with the image and some information along the very top of the screen. To the right of the image, it'll say "View Full-Size Image" (or something related to that), and not too far below that, it'll say the image dimension and its size (ie. 100x100 - 10k).

- If the image is copied onto your desktop, then just bring your cursor over it, and after a few moments, a tiny box will appear that'll tell you the image dimensions, file size, and file type. This is assuming that you're using Windows XP, however; I'm not sure what other operating systems will say.

May I suggest that if you'll be using an image from another website, you may want to copy it to your desktop, then upload it to a place like Image Shack. Copy the url at the very bottom of the upload page (it'll say "Direct Link to Image"), and place it to the "Link to an Off-Site Avatar" section of your profile. If it is below 10 kb in size and less than 100x100 in pixel dimensions, it should work.

(whew, typing workout)

EDIT: Crap, simulpost. Sorry for restating some things that The Joe already mentioned.

If this person likes Garfield I see no problem with it.

There you go. To put it as your avatar, put the following link in the Avatar section of your profile under "Link to an Off-Site Avatar":
Code:
http://img362.imageshack.us/img362/8858/garfieldye0.gif

Also, if you need any other help with images for your avatar or signature, then may I suggest the Banner and Avatar Force? From what I've heard, those slaves are good at image-editing.
