I use Norton Antivirus, and every three seconds, a little thing pops up out of my taskbar and tells me an attempted attack on my computer was blocked. The problem is that it makes the current window inactive, so I can't type or scroll. HOW DO I TURN IT OFF?!?!

If you guys are just going to bash him for having Norton, then I'll lock this.

I'm not bashing him, I'm stating the obvious.

Norton's worked fine for me in all the years I've had it. And you're not providing an alternative, which makes it worse.

OK, guys? If you don't have any serious advice, then don't post here.

Jelly, what I would do is get rid of Norton and Download AVG. It's a really good anti-virus.

No, you weren't. You didn't say which operating system he should get; he didn't even say which one he has!

And it's his anti-virus program that's acting up, not the OS.

1. A real one.

2. Norton only works on Windows, and if they have a version for OS X, I'm sure it's only sold three copies.

3. The operating system is directly related to how many viruses you get. No viruses, no need for a virus program, therefore, no problems with your virus program.

Or get AVG.

I'd try that before downloading anything, it always works for me.

Kids, don't try this at home!
But yeah, Norton has never worked well for me (the new ones anyway). I'd go with ramrod's advice on AVG, but you can also try Avast! antivirus.

The problem stopped as quickly as it started. This thread is pointless now.

Before switching out to a different virus scanner, I'd suggest reading any support articles on Symantec's website along with calling them up (if they even have a support number; I didn't see one in my quick scan over the website). If neither of these options help you out, then I'd say switch to a different virus scanner.

As others have said: try AVG. I won't guarantee that it'll protect you from all viruses, but the free version of it is pretty good. E-mail scanning was kind of trippy for it when I used Mozilla Thunderbird, but I think that's because I was being an idiot and changed around some of the mail settings (I use Gmail now, anyway :P).

If you find that your performance is slowing down with AVG or if it's finding viruses that it can't delete, I'd say switch back to Norton, and either reread the support section of their website/call customer service (if possible). Beyond that, I don't know how to help.
