I've got a new processor for it and it's been bugging me for a while if I should put it in, or get a shop guy to do it. so I guess the question is Are laptops designed to be user-serviceable, or are they loaded with springs and gears that would get lost under the couch with a single tap?

oh, right. It's a Toshiba Portege 3480CT.

Do you know what you're doing? If you have any doubts about whether or not you should attempt this, you probably shouldn't attempt it.

If there's any doubt what to do, there's no doubt what to do.

Laptops are very much NOT designed to be user-serviceable. Usually you can add RAM or swap out the hard drive without much trouble, but replace the processor? That's definitely not something I would attempt on a laptop, and in doing so you'd probably be voiding your warranty.
