Well, you hosted it in imageshack, so you probably clicked the resize option. I suggest trying to rehost and make sure you aren't resizing it.

EDIT: Also, make sure it fits the sig size limit of 100 pixels high and 500 pixels wide.

Shim Sham, I'd like to take a moment to ask you to please review the rules concerning signature sizes. I don't know what 4" x 3" translates into on screen, but we do have size restrictions here. Sigs are to be no more than 100 pixels high, 500 pixels wide, and 65kb file size. Please insure that any sig you use fits within those size restrictions.

Yeah, that translates to 288 x 216...

Though I don't see why you would measure a graphic in inches, unless you meant to print it out.

Even then, most programs will just resize them anyway.

You had a space between the link and the image tags. Here you go:

The image tags have to be on the same line.

Not enough contrast.

Not really. We have a 65 KB limit. Yours is over 90kb. Try changing it to a .gif

FYI, a GIF will almost never yield better compression (at comparable quality) than PNG. GIF = ewwwwwwwww. PNG = yayyyyyyyy!

Really? I've always seen the size noticeably smaller for a .gif when compared to the same image with a .png. Although a .jpeg might have worked too.

Well, there are different ways to save pngs, losing color data as the file size gets smaller.

Probably what's happening is you're saving a 24-bit PNG. GIFs can only be 8-bit. An 8-bit PNG will be very often smaller than the same 8-bit GIF. But, of course, depending on the image, you may lose colors (the same is true for the GIF, of course). In either format, depending on the image, you could go down even further, like 4-bit (16 colors) with possibly no visible loss of quality.

There's also a tool called pngcrush which can remove even further bloat from the file, but it won't automatically do conversions like 32-bit to 8-bit for you.

My opinion: 8-bit PNG's look better than 8-bit GIF's.

I don't think that's really possible, because if the two images use the same colors, then they should look exactly the same. PNG and GIF aren't lossy like JPEG... the only quality that can be lost is color information (by saving an image with fewer colors than it actually has), but both PNG and GIF store colors in the same basic format, so it's the user and the program that have control over that. The file format has nothing to do with it.

Don't GIFs have some kind of crazy transparency difference? Fireworks has an 'alpha transparency' option for GIF images, but it's nothing like PNG alpha transparency.

GIF transparency is only on/off. PNG transparency goes in increments.

Yeah, but I wonder why Fireworks has an 'index transparency' and an 'alpha transparency' option for GIFs, then...

I don't think alpha does anything with GIFs in fireworks.

Just there for show?

Well, there's a box where it shows all the colors, and it puts some kind of symbol by some of them, like maybe they're semi-transparent somehow. If I was on that computer I'd show a screenshot.

It only does that when I select PNG 8 alpha transparency with my version... With GIF it just does regular index transparency with no change on the color palette. Weird.

Wait, what? Shouldn't this be about increasing sig file size by a few KB just to ease the stress of small images where you can barely make out whats going on in it?
