I was about to download something when someone described it as a RAR bomb. I can't find anything online, what is this? |

Hm...i'm not sure, there is a forum called RAR bomb. But that's not it. Have you tried asking the person who told you that? That is, if you can contact him/her. |

A .rar file is an archive like a .zip folder but you have to have a program like WinRar or 7-Zip to extract the files from it. That might be what they were talking about. |

OK, maybe try looking at the name. Maybe It's something that dumps you with a lot of .rar files and you have to extract all of them. Of course I have little knowledge of the subject; I'm just guessing off of the name. Ignore me if this makes no sense. |

You mean extension or what was it? It was a PC game, and it's a .torrent. Here are the comments from where I got RAR bomb. 1. Detected trying to run a fake mouse and keyboard process while the application was running. Please confirm if it's a trojan virus. 2.I ran a scan with NOD32 and it came back fine for me. I think the game has a few bugs though. I can't get past one of the missions, and I tried a walkthrough and did exactly what it says and shows in the pic, but it still won't work. It's still worth playing though. 3. RAR Bomb according to the newest FProt. |

Hi, If this is related to application security, a RAR bomb is a version of compression/decompression bombs that can be used to attack applications (mostly web based). Its main goal is a DoS attack, i.e. to crash down the application service. This kind of bomb is usually made from an amazingly huge file (say 250GB) and compress it to a very small or reasonable size (few hundreds of KB for example). The idea is to ship this seemingly harmless compressed file to an application that, by process or logic, will try to decompress it. When it does, the amount of resources need to be allocated is simply too much. This is true especially if the attacker is sending it multiple times. If the application does not have sufficient security mechanism, it will be vulnerable to this kind of attack. e.e |
