I'm just curious as to why this forum has been bombarded with shoe ads lately. Did we lower our privacy settings? Is it the same person registering again and again after being banned? Did we lower our privacy settings? At the risk of talking over my level of Internet savvy, can't we...er...."ban their IP address" or something like that? I'm not complaining; I'm just simply wondering if they'll go away anytime soon.

We need more hoops to jump through in order to join.

I am part of another message board that was having trouble with spammers. What they did was make a new class of members, "restricted users." When people first join the forum, they are restricted, and all of their posts are reviewed by a moderator before they are posted. This way none of the spam actually hits the boards. After 25 legitimate posts, they are classified as "unrestricted users" and they don't have to be monitored any more.

We need something like this. Desperately.

Well, it's not that much spam. And it's not like it's anything offensive either (unless you really, really have something against shoes). It's basically at a managable level for now, eh?

Not that much? There were like eight threads in one day! And they weren't deleted for awhile. The very act of spamming is offensive to me. And just because these last few spam attacks may have been "manageable," doesn't mean they will be in the future, or that future ads for "shoes" won't actually contain links to phishing or porn sites.

We shouldn't tolerate spammers, we should actively try to prevent them from spamming. It seems really lazy and potentially dangerous to just allow people to trash our boards and then clean up their messes afterwards.

We're not desperate for anything right now. I'm not going to restrict legitimate new users based on a handful of unwanted messages (which isn't even close to the amount we've had to put up with in the past).

The real reason is that I haven't been here with no life to jump on spam like a pit bull on a rack of ribs.
That probably won't change too much, but I will be watching (A LOT MORE OFTEN) for all of your admin needs.

The thing is, adding more hoops to the registration process would probably take more effort than just deleting the small amount spam as it shows up. Plus the fact that it would inconvenience legitimate new users.

If you do see spam, just hit the report post button and then ignore it. It'll disappear in due time.

Until if/when the spam becomes too much to manage in this way, or too offensive to just let it sit until a mod sees it, this is probably the best solution, from a cost/benefit point of view.

Interestingly, in the week since the forum reopened, I haven't seen a single piece of spam. Now mentioning this might be tempting fate, so I'll go knock on some wood now. The fact remains, though.
