Image host it, then use the URL avatar space. Use imageshack.us

Tompkins,

What program are you using to make and save your avatars? If it's MS Paint, then that's the problem. Don't use it. Yes, that means if MS Paint is all you've got, you're out of luck.

No matter what, unless your avatar is a photograph, it should be saved as a PNG (never a GIF).

If you're using Photoshop, use Save for Web and save it as a PNG. If you're using Paint Shop Pro, I think there's an Optimize wizard or an Export PNG wizard. In either case, play with the colors settings. Choose indexed color, and turn down the number of colors (in power-of-two increments, e.g. 256, 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1) until you break the 10k barrier. Fewer colors means a smaller file.

You can order it from the Adobe website, for only $649.00 US.

Though if you aren't privy to that kind of money, you might want to consider trying The Gimp. It's free.

I'm fond of a free program called Irfanview. You can't really do anything in terms of drawing or adding to a pic in it, but it's great for processing them. You can crop, reduce the image dimensions or resolution, and save as pretty much anything (including PNG), specifying what quality you want. Any of the above methods could reduce your filesize. I'd recommend getting the image to the dimensions you want, then progressively reduce the quality you save at until it's what you want.
