What are some of your favorite Homestar Runner toon/SBEmail/etc. jokes that are not so explicit in the toon and are more conceptual but not really hidden?

Yeah I know, it's tough to explain, but some examples might help. Here are some of my favs:

Decemberween pageant- the idea of having two people dress up as Kobe Bryant, and neither showing up in the play. It's just a hilarious idea, but there's no place for you to laugh at it while watching the toon.
Homsar- instead of correcting Vinnie C.'s spelling, spontaneously creating a new character and treating the character as such.
Credit card- this one's more obvious than the others- I just love the part where after buying a 3 billion dollar spaceship, SB clicks twice on "killer robot" for 6 million on Homestar's card, and each time you just know that it's ringing up millions of dollars with each click.

DNA Evidence was charming, but came off as annoying. They should've put the deleted scene in place of Pom Pom showing up and broke the DNAE chain right there.

As for the toons themself, yeah, what you mentioned. "Best x bucks I ever spent" tends to be funny as well.

I actually like the DNA evidence thing, and I think a lot of people agree with me. If they made it the whole emailm it would be annoying. But now it's a funny thing hidden in every email, and it's fun to see how they use it each week. Kind of an Alfred Hitchcock thing.

Oh no, by "not so obvious jokes" I didn't mean reference jokes or running gags. Just "conceptual jokes" if that makes any sense.
The two Kobe Bryants and neither appearing in the play is the best example.

I think I know what you mean. And I've always thought the Homsar one was totally hilarious, especially since when I first saw the email I hadn't yet seen Homsar in any other 'toons.

I'm not sure of any other examples, though.

How about the soapbox with the rapidly-increasing contents. Eleven Soaps, Twelve of Them, Thirteen Yall, etc.

and Kewpie Dan, seriously WHAT IS UP with that guy.

the fact that even though the Cheat is watching a horror movie (about a killer truck), whenever he turns the mute off, the guy rambles on about almost the same exact thing each time, like the whole movie is monotonous and there's no actual truck.

"...think this truck is trying to kill me!"

30 to 40 seconds later

"...and i think it's the same truck that tried to kill my brother!"

also how when the Compy explodes and Strongbad is depressed, at one point he says he doesn't remember one emailer's name, then uses it in the sentence.

"And...and I don't remember your name, Jamie..."

The use of the name "Dan" cracks me up every single time. No further elaboration to that name, just... that. It's classic.

Though maybe that may qualify as a "running gag" or such.

Hmmm... I'm trying to think of some older stuff that I still quote on a somewhat daily basis... Well, I really love how in "The Strongest Man in the World" toon, Homestar keeps messing up the contest's name:

"That strangest man in the world contest ain't gonna win itself!"

and

"I bet I could lift fifty stringiest man in the world contests!"

Also, the fact that he says "I bet I could *lift*" ... hehehe, that gets me every time!

(Sorry if this wasn't exactly what you meant, but I just wanted to bring this up really badly.)

I just recently relised that in TGS 11, there is, in adition to a shirt folding store, a pants folding store, and a *shudders* thong folding store. Also, the canoe that cheerleader and The ugly one ride over to the boy's camp says Canoe Reeves DO YA GET IT? DO YA DO YA DO YA DO YA???

I know exactly what you mean, TheTinyGiant. It's the not-obvious jokes that keep me coming back for more. My favorite type of these types of jokes are the interrupted conversations... they go by kinda fast and may require multiple viewings to even notice them. My favorite example is in the sbemail "Army" when Strong Bad says:

"Yeah, I don't know. Maybe there is a goodminton."

I liked that unnatural e-mail where Homestar thought he was an ant.

Sorry guys, I'm not so sure you're getting the implicit jokes concept, although the stuff you mentioned isn't too bad. It's a joke that goes long term, may be over the span of a couple minutes, that you have to really think about on a deeper level afterwards to get. A running joke/running gag is NOT an implicit joke, and close scrutiny won't necessarily reveal them. They're "big picture" jokes you could say. I was hoping people would find more of them, although I can understand if you can't- they're tough to find.

That Pom Pom and Strong Mad both showing up as Kobe Bryant, then neither showing in the play is, once again, really the best example.

Other ones:
Coach Z puts gum on his face, hops on his foot, and sings a song in Record Book right? Then Homsar does the same. The implicit joke is: Not only was Coach Z's attempt lame, but it wasn't even completely unique, because Homsar did exactly the same thing.
Big White Face: All along, Strong Bad never understands the obvious reference to Strong Sad.
Long pants: Strong Bad alters the email, only to find that it gets answered anyway.
DNA Evidence (toon): Strong Sad even bothers to say that stuff out loud and trace it, instead of just knowing it's himself and not saying anything.
Animal: Strong Bad never checked his computer for viruses. (This one is REALLY deep and not that funny)
50k Racewalker: You have to go a full 40ish steps just to get to 0.010k, and the objective is to go to 50k. The whole game is a joke, that it's so fantastically hard and impractical to beat.

I liked how strongbad gave strong sad sanka in caffeine, even though sanka is decaffeinated.

In that cartoon where Strong Bad steals Homestar's credit card, I found it funny that he could buy a bag of money.

I never thought the "homsar" thing was all that funny, because when I first saw it I was new to the site (it was probably the third or second thing I saw) so I thought he was a real character, then later when I did get it, it wasn't as funny as it would have been.

i dont know if this is what ur talking about, but i just find it funny that the fact that the characters arent human and that it's never addressed is funny. the fact that homestar is completely white, that marzipan is broom-shaped(which reminds me of "i am not your broom" by tmbg) and the fact that there are 2 humans in the strong family and then an elephant with the zoloft dot for a head. the fact that there's a depressed guy whose head looks like the zoloft dot is funny to me too.

The way I think about it, there's no reason why it should be addressed in the show. They live in a universe where not everybody is human, and that's just the way it is. Strong Bad and Strong Mad aren't really human either. Strong Bad has a huge head, a wrestling mask for a face, and boxing gloves for hands, and Strong Mad is shaped like a cube and has a face in the middle of his chest.

But I would like to see the way the Brothers Strong don't look anything like either other addressed. It was referred to briefly in Family Resemblence.

How about the fact that when Homestar sings his "Neverending Soda" song when he guest-hosts a Strong Bad email, he is increasing the length of the toon's content? If he kept it up, it would be never-ending.

I also like the box that we see when Senor Cardgage is sleeping in the alleyway in "Senorial Day." It's labeled "UNLABELED BOX."

It's a parabox.

I always thought it was funny how in "army," the guy with the big knife in the painting had a bowl on his head like the rest of them. And i also thought it was funny that nobody grabbed the painting or Benedetto, yet somehow both still followed them to strong badia.

You know, I think I've got one! A real, bona fide "extended joke." In the latest email (hygiene), where Strong Bad's film is ostensibly for the purpose of giving good hygiene tips, but it never actually offers any good advice. It only serves as an avenue for Strong Bad to insult Homestar (and John) and to talk about what an awesome guy he himself is. Have I got the idea?

Incidentally, I found that aspect of the email to be pretty dang funny.
