Post subject:  Observation of the Halloween toons

I noticed something about the Halloween toons: each one always feature costumes from some form of entertainment (be they movies, TV shows or video games) that came out in 1984 and/or (mostly "or") 1985.

Let me explain in list form:

HOMESTARLOWEEN PARTY:
--Pom Pom was the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man from "Ghostbusters" (1984)

THE HOUSE THAT GAVE SUCKY TREATS
--Strong Bad was Carmen Sandiego, who first originated in the 1985 computer game, "Where In the World Is Carmen Sandiego?"

PUMPKIN CARVE-NIVAL
--The King of Town dressed as classic Nintendo character Mario from "Super Mario Bros." (1985)

3 TIMES HALLOWEEN FUNJOB
--Strong Bad's costume was Ozone from the "Breakin'" series of movies (both came out in 1984)

HALLOWEEN FAIRSTIVAL
--The Poopsmith was dressed as Lion-O from "Thundercats" (1985)

HALLOWEEN POTION-MA-JIG
--Coach Z was Theo Huxtable, a character on the TV show "The Cosby Show" (1984; in fact his shirt was from an episode that specific year)

HAPPY HALLOW-DAY
--Homestar was Scott Howard from "Teen Wolf" (1985)
--The Cheat was Gizmo from the "Gremlins" series of movies, the first of which came out in 1984

JIBBLIES 2
--The Poopsmith dressed as Doc Brown from the "Back To the Future" series of movies, the first of which came out in 1985

Interesting, isn't it?

That's a very interesting observation. I wonder if this is purposefully planned or if it just happens to be coincidental. Probably a bit of both. I would suspect that TBC try to include stuff from many different eras, including the 80s, and it just so happens that stuff from each cartoon is from those two years. But again, good observation.

If anything, this shows us how much time you have on your hands to think about such things. ;)

Somehow I knew that I would get a response like this. ;)

And also see this and this.

(Though if you notice, many instances are from Halloween toons.)

Well, I was just focusing on the Halloween costumes themselves.

I know it's cliche, forgive me. But I wouldn't have written it if I wasn't truly impressed by your depth of research.

Yeah, I bet you wouldn't. But I have noticed it and I just thought I'd bring it out into the open.

EDIT: By the way, I hope the new Halloween toon carries on this tradition of either 1984 or '85.

If there was ever a 3ed season for I Love the 80s, Homestar & co should do all the commentary.

They've already done a 3rd season; maybe a 4th season, though.

At first, I thought that the newest H'ween toon would break this semi-tradition of either 1984 or '85, but I feel that Strong Sad's Sam Kinison costume does fit the bill for 1984 on account of the fact that, after I looked it up (out of curiosity), that's when he made his breakthrough appearance on Rodney Dangerfield's Ninth Annual Comedians Special, which aired on HBO.

Yeah, I noticed that, too. It's all really obscure, you know?

Sorry for bumping this up from a year ago, but I felt it bears mentioning that in terms of the years 1984 and '85, I think "Clue" does fit this for 2009's Halloween toon, because the game was made into a movie in 1985.

You're right about that.

On a tangentially related note: does anyone else think that this year's two Halloween 'toons were particularly strong offerings? I laughed out loud multiple times at each of them, and overall I think the entertainment value was well above the bar.

It isn't only the last two. Jibblies II was also pretty good. the 04 and 05 ones wern't particularly bad, but they wern't overly good either. 3 times halloween funjob was quite interesting (I remember the day that one was new...), and the ones before it aren't anything special.

And we're also probably going to get yet another round of fan-made Homestar costumes, once again commentated and ragged on by Strong Bad.

Dig Dug was released in 1982. So Pom Pom's costume of Pooka fits in as well.

I'm not talking about all the '80s years, just 1984 or '85. If it was for all the '80s years featured in each toon, the list would probably get a shade long.
