Not only that, I'm pretty sure "Г" is "G", not "H". And "Х" is more like Scots or German "ch" than the English one. And "Ц" is closer to soft "c" than hard "c". And all of them are assuming a phonetic spelling, which neither English or Russian does.

Ugh.

Just swapping out the English words one letter at a time does not a transliteration make.

While not absolute, Russian is much more logical, pronunciation-wise, than English is... These are more likely to be pronounced "Khom-meh-star" and "T-khe Khe-at" than "Homestar" and "The Cheat". (Note: for all those "kh"es, think the "ch" in the word "loch". For the vowels in "Khe-at", think the Swe atshirt float in Fall Float Parade.)

Russian doesn't have a "th" sound... most Russians, when pronouncing a word with a "th" would just use "t". So for The Cheat, "Те Чийт" would be the closest, pronunciation-wise.

I've never learned Russian, though I've often wanted to... I have family from Russia. I managed to learn most of Cyrillic, though. I've tried to find out if there's a standard way of representing English words in Cyrillic... but unfortunately, the link's red on the Wikipedia page, and Google doesn't give me anything interesting...

So, my version of the list:
Хомстaр Раннер - Homestar Runner
Стронг Бaд - Strong Bad
Пом Пом - Pom Pom
Марзйпан - Marzipan
Стронг Мaд - Strong Mad
Те Чийт - The Cheat
Стронг Сaд - Strong Sad
Коч З - Coach Z
Бабс - Bubs
Те Кинг оф Тон - The King of Town
Те Пупсмйт - the Poopsmith
Хомсaр - Homsar

I'm not sure about "Тон" for "Town", though... it's not very close, but I don't know if Russian even has any "w"-style vowels... (I have no idea where you got "щ" from, though... or "ц" for "c"...)

Now look mister Global moderator, this was russian cyrilic, not russian. I don't speak russian so well... But that what you have wroat is not russian at all. Ton is not as same as Town (Russians have an w, how else they would writhe wikipedia: .
So if you want russian, here's some russian... hom much I know (I'm from Croatia, and I have a few russian friends, but I don't know how to speak russian)

I know... I was just transliterating, same as you and Larson were before. Though, the proper-translated list is great! Much more interesting...

Sorry, I didn't know English wasn't your first language... in case you didn't know the words: Translating = actually using Russian words (like "царь города" for the KoT). Transliterating = still using English words, but using the Russian alphabet (usually just trying to make it be pronounced the same).

For instance, if I translate "царь города" back to English, it's "King of Town" (Google claims "king of the city"). Transliterate it back to English, and we get "tsar goroda" - roughly how it's pronounced in Russian.

It seems they spell it Википедия - Vikipediya.

However, using V for W doesn't work that well in words like "town", where the W is a vowel... Since you clearly know more about Russian than I do, does Russian actually have that "ow" diphthong? It seems Wikipedia doesn't think so...

I'd translate it [Homestar] as Hemmsärna, but I'm far from proficient in Swedish.

Why did I say that? Skelettfejset was right of course, it's Hemstjärna.

My ability to transliterate into Japanese isn't great, but here's what I think the character's names would be in katakana.

Homestar Runner - ホームスター ラナー
Pom Pom - ポム ポム
Marzipan - マージパン
Strong Bad - サトゥローング バーヅ
Strong Sad - サトゥローング サーヅ
Strong Mad - サトゥローング マヅ
The Cheat - チ チート
Bubs - バーブス
Coach Z - コーチュ ジー
The King of Town - チ キーング オヴ タオヌ
The Poopsmith - チ プープスミーテュ
Homsar - ホーサー

I'm probably wrong though. I'm not exactly sure what amount to use the dashes in.

However, Dålig here does mean "bad", but as in "poor". The more correct way of Strong Bad's Swedish name should be Stark Elak (which means "bad" as in "cruel").

That got me thinking.

The English language is a very complex one. Words mean many different things. Consider these names:

Strong Mad

Strong Bad

Strong Sad

All this time, I've assumed that Mad implies an angry character, Bad implies a devious character, and Sad implies a depressed character. All of this is true. However, it just now occurred to me that I could take into account other meanings of those words.

Mad = insane, Bad = poor, and Sad = pathetic.

How do those traits apply to the characters? It's fun to think about! English is a wonderful language.

Yeah, here in the UK, "mad" means insane more often than it means angry, so that was my first assumption for him. Of course, it could work either way.

I'd translate it [Homestar] as Hemmsärna, but I'm far from proficient in Swedish.

Why did I say that? Skelettfejset was right of course, it's Hemstjärna.

Because you were talking about Homsar, not Homestar.

Yeah seeing people translate into languages that were already done kind of implied that we were running out, but when we start using binary and Captain Underpants you know this thread's past its due. :-D
In a good way, though. Binary is cool.
Man if I was a proper Asian I'd be able to translate things into Mandarin, I'm sorry. :kot: Star is xīngxīng though, that's like the only word in my 50-word vocabulary that's relevant. Google says it can just be xīng.

Uhh, Not Good is bù hăo?

Ooh, I like that one.

EDIT: Went and looked up 'home' later and it's jiā! How did I forget that.
Also you know what would be really adorable? Making Strong Sad's name feminine! Uhh in French that is.

In Russian (I'm not too sure about these; I copied these off a free translator, but they ARE translated, not just a different alphabet)
Homestar Runner-Домашнийзвездный Бегун
Strong Bad-Сильный Плохо
The Cheat-Обман
Strong Mad-Сильный Безумный
Strong Sad-Сильный Грустный
Bubs-Выпивки
Coach Z-Тренер З
King of Town-Король Города
The Poopsmith-Кузнец кормы

It wouldn't translate Homsar. Anyone know how to pronounce these?
