This just popped into my head:

Strong Bad, Strong Mad, and Strong Sad are brothers, right? Well, what's their last name? Bad, Mad, and Sad? How would they be brothers if that was the case? Then I thought about this: is Strong their last name? Considering that they come from parts unknown, maybe their home country put the last name first. If they hadn't kept it like that when they moved to Free Country, U.S.A., would their names be Bad Strong, Mad Strond, and Sad Strong?

What do you think?

The Strong family follow the Japanese tradition, in which the family (or sir) name comes first, followed by the personal name.

I think that the Homestar Runner universe isn't to be questioned. This is no different then "How does Strong Bad type with boxing gloves on?" and "How can Homestar pick stuff up if he has no arms?". I think that the Brothers Chaps just wanted a to make wholesome and funny cartoon where things don't always have to make sense. Seriously, who really cares if their names don't make sense by our standards? I don't think it really makes a difference, except that when you do think about it, it makes the cartoons a little bit funnier.

Maybe Parts Unknown is near Japan.

Or not.

Exactly.

Questioning the H*R universe will only lead to headaches. Regarding the names, the whole Japanese thing kinda does make sense, kinda.

Actually, it's a general Asian practice to put the family name first. I never considered it weird that the Strongs do it that way.

Maybe the mother is secretly asian? That would explain the look to Strong Sad's eyes. I've always thought that he looked a little asian to me.

I personally think that their last name is Ad but and theyre real names are Strong S. Ad, Strong B. Ad, and Strong M. Ad. But they shortened them because they didnt want people to know their middle names were Seymore, Brutis and Maurice!

Or im just crazy, either one really

Judging by the manga Shaman King, I believe this is Chinese, not Japanese. (in the manga, there are "Asakura" and "Oyamada" families, and the sons of which both have a first name. However, a Chinese character and his sister are named Tao Ren and Tao Jun, respectively).

Maybe that's the after-effect when "Clippy" decides he's going to be an artist. Thank goodness that infernal paper clip isn't on the Mac!

I hope they're not Japanese letters, as he did say Chinese. Also, you probably shouldn't point out other people's spelling errors, Mr. Black Kettle.

P.S. Mr. Black Kettle: Pot calling the kettle black. Perhaps I should have said that in the first place.

They are chinese characters. I copied the first name, pasted them into a translating program, and translated them from Chinese to English.

What I got was not pretty, it was slimey, and smelly, and kind of stung my eyes.

The cryptic translation is...

"Powerful is bad."

When I tried translating from Japanese to English, it said "No translation available."

You must not have chinese fonts installed on your system. Either that, or a bunch of goons messed with your computer.

Then why did John, and some other people who aren't scam artists call him Mr. Bad? Are they unaware of Japanese naming conventions?

They've also been reffered to many times as The Brothers Strong, which helps emphasize the point. Also considering their name's origin (a poorly translated NES wrestling game where a tag team were known as "The Strong Bads"), there's many things that support the Asian theory. Makes you think...well, makes me think.

Their surname is Strong. No question. And Strong Bad gets called Mr Bad, at least once by Bubs, for the same reason that Strong Bad calls Marzipan Mrs Pan when he's prank calling her.

(1) How is wondering what their last name is questioning it? (2)What's not awesome about Strong Sad?
