Post subject:  Strong Bad = Donald Duck?

Having seen how much Strong Bad is basically the top guy on the website nowadays, I'm beginning to think that this kind of popularity is on a par with Donald Duck.

What do I mean by that, you ask? Well, in the mid-to-late 1930s, as Donald's popularity intensified, it grew so much that it actually began to eclipse the popularity of Mickey Mouse, who was coming under fire for doing objectionable things, while Donald was allowed to do those things, a superb example of peoples' feelings during the Depression. Donald would become, in the words of Walt Disney, the "(Clark) Gable of our stable", which means that Donald was a top star at Disney in the annals of cartoon shorts at the Disney studios throughout the 1930s, '40s and on into the '50s and '60s.

Now, how does that compare with Strong Bad, you ask? Well, I'll tell you. In the early days, Homestar, like Mickey at Disney, was the main hero and, like Mickey, always came out on top. But even in the early days, Strong Bad, Homestar's foil (just as Donald was Mickey's foil), was jockeying for popularity. Now, especially given where they stand now, I think it's safe to say that SB is the Brothers Chaps' equivalent of Donald Duck at Disney, in that he is the main guy that people visit the site for, what with the emails and all.

What are your thoughts?

...

Uh...

No, it's not really anything like that.

I think Capt.'s analogy is better. Everyone knows Donald Duck is better than that wimp Mickey.

But Warner Bros. cartoons are just better than the Disney cartoons in general.

The jerks are often among the most popular characters. In Strong Bad's case, it helped that he got a big role and became quite witty as well.

That's not a nice thing to say. Maybe Donald is better, but Mickey is not a wimp.

I don't believe that's true. I think they're both good equally. Both studios' sets of cartoons are wonderful in their own rights.

I have both studios' cartoons, though the Disney ones' collections are more complete; I've only started to get the WB toons on DVD. I got that first volume 4-disc set only this Christmas, but will probably only get the second one and not all five of them, because they put too many of the better WB cartoons close together instead of spreading them out. But I digress.

Interestingly, Donald wears a shirt and no pants, while Strong Bad wears pants but no shirt. Coincidence?

Probably.

And then there's their ways of speaking: SB has a gravelly voice (early on, with a Hispanic accent) and Donald Duck has a raspy, quack-like voice that is sometimes notorious for causing people to not comprehend what he is saying. Poor Donald.

And let's not forget the way both characters are dressed: SB is dressed as a lucha libre wrestler with boxing gloves for hands and Donald is dressed as a sailor.

I'd think of Stro Bro's (Yes, I said it.) and Homestar's popularity is kind of like Mario and Luigi somehow. As it started, Homestar was supposed to be the main character, as we all hopefully know. Then, as the Strong Bad E-mails started, people started to like Strong Bad more. Like the Mario games, they are the mian characters. Except, Strong Bad became more of the "main guy" instead of Homestar. In this case, Strong Bad = Luigi, Homestar = Mario. People (as far as I know)started to like Luigi more.

I heard what breakout character is and it's sometimes known as "The Fonzie Syndrome". Speaking of that, There's some other characters I known that relate to Strong Bad.

Daffy Duck is one of the examples. Like Donald Duck, he hates the main hero, Bugs Bunny, like in the same manner as Strong Bad hates Homestar Runner. Then, there's "Lost in Space". There was originally two bad guys name Dr. Zachary Smith and his companion, The Robot. However, Jonathan Harris, who played the villain, changed the character into a good, but always get stuff wrong, much like Strong Bad when they change him from a bad guy to a funny guy.

I've seen on Wikipedia about breakout character and I seen Strong Bad is in the list! :)
