So, i think ive said this before but just to reiderate, Pom Pom is my least favorite charicter. But until now i havent been able to pin point why. He dosent talk and he dosent do any thing, but so dose the poop smith, so why is he less funny. then it came to me, the thing that sets Pom Pom apart from other charicters. He has no self depricating humor. ever other charicter has jokes at there expence, except him. he always to cool for that. hes perfect, and thats not funny.

No wai! Pom Pom is amazing and should have a more expanded filmography.

You're right nobody treats him as a loser, but he's had his moments - remember the gun, remember A Jumping Jack Contest (when he snubbed Homestar, and when Strong Bad impersonated him), remember his language, all his girls, the way things dissolve into his body, the way he bounces off everything. All around great character with awesome comic potential. Shame they don't use him much, possibly my only beef with their use of characters at all.

What's funny about it is the way it's used. Like in the Halloween one, when he was talking about his girls. Or the thing on his Pom Pilot.

Summary: He doesn't like Pom Pom because unlike other characters they never make fun of him. (Not sure that totally does it justice, but you wanted one sentence, and that's the best I can do.)

Wow, if someone hadn't already replied, I would have just deleted that. The original post is not that long at all, and if you're going to participate in a forum you should be expected to read posts of that length. On the other hand, the spelling and grammar could be expected to be somewhat better, and so for ease of reading I will take care of that now:
Quote:
Pom Pom is my least favorite character, but until now I haven't been able to pinpoint why. He doesn't really talk and he doesn't do much of anything, but neither does the Poopsmith, so why is Pom Pom less funny? Then it came to me: the thing that sets Pom Pom apart from other characters is that he has no jokes made at his expense. Every other character does, but not him. He's always too cool for that. He's perfect, and that's not funny.

There are many examples in comedy of the cool character who has it pretty easy: the Fonz (Happy Days), Hyde (That '70s Show), Rusty (the Ocean's series), Hefty Smurf—just to name a few. These characters are generally admired by the other characters and the audience and serve as foils for the personalities of the other characters.

hmm prehaps im unique in my beliefs on this subject, but to be honest i never really liked those other charicters either, for much the same reason.

on a side note, how do i spell check my posts. tried the copy paste from word thing but for some reason i cant find the spell checker.

I think dot com is asking you to read over your post and check for any obvious spelling errors. No one is going to be upset if you make a small spelling error. And I'm sure you know that the first letter of a sentence and the word "I" are capitalized, and doing those things could improve the readability of your posts a lot.

You might try Firefox, which has a spell checker built in. And, as LJ said, proper capitalization goes a long way.

On the spectrum of nerd to cool, where do you see yourself? Perhaps you don't like those characters because you don't identify with them. I never really watched Happy Days, and I just said the Smurfs to be funny, but I always liked how Hyde always knew what to say and that Rusty was unflappable.

Although TBC rarely make fun of Pom Pom (Homestar's comment about his language in "Strongest Man in the World" being the only example that readily comes to mind), they do use his coolness for comedic effect: the girls in his story in "Homestarloween Party" and beating up Strong Bad to earn a 1-up are my two favorites.

If you really want a show where every single character gets made fun of in some way, then have fun trying to have a comedy show that does that. There's always going to be one (no matter how obscure he or she is) that is just that cool and/or perfect and/or respected.

Besides, I don't think Strong Bad (or anyone else) would make fun of Pom Pom, considering he gave SB a big pummeling in pom pom. Just saying.

Ok, I do have to cede a point there. There was one time when Pom Pom made me laugh. And that was when he got the 1-Up from "beating the ever loving snot" outta Strong Bad

Ironically, Pom Pom is my favorite character, which is why it upsets me to see that he's not in many Toons anymore.

Why? I like his big, bouncy, squishy body. :P

Plus, he's so cool, cooler then ANYONE else on the site, and everyone knows it (including the characters on the site)!

Sometimes you don't need to be funny.

...Sometimes...

I mean, there's got to be a straight man SOMEWHERE in the mix.

I sort of agree. The only two times I can remember laughing at Pom Pom were in "Strongest Man in the World" when Homestar tells him to watch his language, and in the winter pool email when he jumps on the jello and flies in the sky. In both of these instances, Pom Pom loses control (gets overly angry in one, physically out of control in the other). In the other toons, Pom Pom is just full of himself and never seems to suffer because of it. At least people like the Fonz occasionally suffered.

Suffering is the crux of comedy. Pom Pom doesn't suffer enough to be funny.

I've always thought Pom Pom's part of the Homestarloween Party was funny, not only because of the pom-faced girls but also because they used Pom Pom's unintelligible speech for comedic effect (you have to pay attention to figure out what he might be saying, like Chewbacca).

^ Seconded.

Each character on H*R is really distinct, if you ask me there's not even any vague similarities in personality. If Pom Pom isn't the Cool Kid, what do you propose he should be?

Never said Pom Pom should change, just that he isint funny. Mabey TBC made him thus so as to underline the funnyness of other charicters. So as to the site as a whole he has his usses, if only to make others look funnyer by compairison. But that being said, I think hes still not funny on his own. Which was the point I was trying to make.
