First off: This is not an anti-Strong Sad thread at all. I am not anti-Strong Sad in any shape, way or form.

Now that that's out of the way, I'll begin.

This is my basis: Strong Sad's original character has been lost, and he is now more of a filler character.

You see, I first starting thinking this when I bought the Everything Else DVDs. I haven't been a Homestar fan very long, so there were lots of cartoons I had never seen before. In those cartoons, I was surprised to see just how deppressed and down-in-the-dumpy Strong Sad really was. Compared to those, he rarely expresses sadness anymore, is much more poetic, and sometimes even sarcastic to Strong Bad.

This is why I don't think he's the character TBC originally planned him to be. This is not necessarily a bad thing.

An example of him being a filler character is the sbemail 'your edge.' In this sbemail, it seems like TBC used Strong Sad just because he was there and they needed a character to do something. He's not sad or depressed at all, and instead is poetic (STRONG SAD: ...so I can finish my novellique.), witty (Uh, are you sure you wanna go on record with that explanation?) and even fools Strong Bad. I didn't see anything remotely in-character in that e-mail, save for the poeticness.

So, that wasn't quite as long or rant-ish as I had originally planned in my head, but I think I made a couple of solid points. I've been feeling like this for a while, so I thought I would share it with you. Please feel free to disagree and/or mock me, I would love to hear your opinions and the chance to expand on my opinion.

I feel he's evolved as a character; in fact, I feel a lot of characters have from the original toons. He's more "nerd" and less "whiner" now, which gives for much more flexible dialogue and situations with him.

I think it all depends on what kind of whining-to-electricity conversion machine you've designed. Depending on its efficiency, even a little whining could produce a lot of power.

I couldn't disagree more. With the second half of your sentence. I agree that he's not like he was nine years ago, but neither are any of the other characters.

That's his character now. He's poetic and sarcastic, among other things. He's not more of a filler character because he's not sad anymore.

Yes, he's more interesting this way.

Strong Sad was perfectly in character there. It would've been out of character to see him being all depressed and whiny. His character has developed away from the sadness in earlier toons, and I'm glad it has, because now he has more depth, and he's just a more interesting character.

All the characters have changed since the website went up. Homestar's not a hero anymore, Pom Pom barely appears, Strong Bad isn't a one-dimensional villain character, Strong Mad isn't just a thug, Coach Z isn't a bland mentor type, Marzipan doesn't like Homestar very much, and nobody likes the King of Town. Bubs and The Cheat haven't changed much, but The Cheat didn't really have a preset personality to begin with. He was just Strong Bad's little yellow thing.

Strong Sad isn't really a filler character. In the example you gave, Strong Sad would've been the only one who would make fun of Strong Bad and then try to keep him down there for longer. He wants Strong Bad to leave him alone, and he thinks he's weird.

Sorry, I'm not very good at organising my thoughts so I'm not sure if I'm repeating myself. I don't think that Strong Sad is any more of a filler characters than the others. His personality just doesn't match his name anymore.
