It's impossible to tell, since Homestar is only in one language.

And that language... is... English. Probably.

Although TBC did consider doing subtitles in other languages for a while.

About the characters speaking other languages thing: Homestar did briefly speak Spanish in the First Time Here? toon.

The subtitles project on the wiki used to have the names translated into German and Spanish, until it was decided that leaving the names as they are would be better. Also, they were transliterated into Hebrew, but not translated. These are the main characters:

Homestar Runner
German: Heimstern Läufer
Hebrew: הומסטאר ראנר
Spanish: Casaestrella Corredor

Strong Bad
German: Stark Schlecht
Hebrew: סטרונג באד
Spanish: Fuerte Malo

Pom Pom
German: Pompon
Hebrew: פום פום
Spanish: Pom Pom

Marzipan
German: Marzipan
Hebrew: מרזיפן
Spanish: Mazapán

Strong Mad
German: Stark Wütend
Hebrew: סטרונג מאד
Spanish: Fuerte Enojado

The Cheat
German: Der Cheat
Hebrew: הצ'יט
Spanish: El Cheat

Strong Sad
German: Stark Traurig
Hebrew: סטרונג סאד
Spanish: Fuerte Triste

Coach Z
German: Trainer Z
Hebrew: המאמן זי
Spanish: Entrenador Z

Bubs
German: Bubs
Hebrew: באבס
Spanish: Bubs

The King of Town
German: Der König der Stadt
Hebrew: הקינג אוף טאון
Spanish:El Rey de la Ciudad

The Poopsmith
German: Der Mistschmied
Hebrew: הפופסמית'
Spanish: El Herrero de Caca

Homsar
German: Hemsern
Hebrew: הומסר
Spanish: Casetrella

...Yeah. I translated the names into Swedish once, but my Swedish isn't very good.

And the emails reveal a few more foreign language of Strong Bad's name, as well.

In Swedish, for example, Strong Bad's name (as mentioned in email #43, LITTLE QUESTIONS) is Stark Dålig. However, Dålig here does mean "bad", but as in "poor". The more correct way of Strong Bad's Swedish name should be Stark Elak (which means "bad" as in "cruel").

But anyway, SB's Swedish name is Stark Dålig.

BTW, according to email #111: OTHER DAYS, SB's Polish name is Silne Złe.

If you pronounced סטרונג באד aloud, it'd sound pretty much like "Strong Bad", it's not the Hebrew words for Strong and Bad. But I'm really bad at defining things, so here's a dictionary.com link.

Names are the same in any language. They might be pronounced differently, but they're still the same.

So here's a list of some foreign languages displaying Strong Bad's name in said languages

  • Stark Schlecht (German)
  • סטרונג באד (Hebrew)
  • Fuerte Malo (Spanish)
  • Stark Dålig (Swedish)
  • Silne Złe (Polish)
  • Gou koppidoi (Japanese)

Not bad, eh?

The crap kind of Japanese is that?

Homestar Runner = Homuusei Shosha (transliterated: Homuustaa Ranna)
Strong Bad = Tsuyoi Warui (translit: Sutorongu Baado)
Strong Mad = Tsuyoi Majigire (translit: Sutorongu Maado)
Strong Sad = Tsuyoi Kanashii (translit: Sutorongu Saado)
The Cheat = Ikamashi (translit: Za Chiito)
The King of Town = Gaiku no Ousama (translit: Kingu ofu Taun)

On a slightly related note, has anyone thought about the sort of prounouns each character would use in Japanese? Marzipan would obviously use the formal/feminine "watashi", and maybe Strong Sad as well, while I think Homestar would use the less formal "boku", and Strong Bad and The Cheat would use the very informal/presumptuous "ore", while the old-and-out-of-touch King of Town would use the old-fashioned "ware". And that's just the singluar personal pronoun.

I don't know much about Japanese, but it seem to me that Strong Bad might use omae, one of the ruder forms of you, for just about everybody.

I believe they thought it would be fun to do an entire Strong Bad Email in Spanish with no subtitles at all, but maybe I'm thinking of a different thing.

They've mentioned both.

The top of the subtitles page on the wiki wrote:
''We've actually considered— there's a SWF that you can I guess easily put in subtitles for things, that somebody sent us— they had built this little thing that you just— it looked at the XML feed I guess, and I don't know how it works but like it'll subtitle your cartoons. So we've considered that, doing it at least in Spanish and Korean maybe.''

Hebrew would be cool! But the Number 1 language I would like to hear Homestar cartoons is in Swahili. Imagine how the voices would be though. Oh well. Just a thought

Not the best as Swahili but here could be some of the names:

Homestar: Nyota Nyumbani
Strong Bad: enye nguvubovu
The cheat: Dumale (The Cheetah)
Coach Z: Kochi Z
Strong Mad: enye nguvu kuchukia
Strong Sad: enye nguvua huzuni
King of Town: Mfalme ya Mji
1-up: Moja juu

That got me thinking.

The English language is a very complex one. Words mean many different things. Consider these names:

Strong Mad

Strong Bad

Strong Sad

All this time, I've assumed that Mad implies an angry character, Bad implies a devious character, and Sad implies a depressed character. All of this is true. However, it just now occurred to me that I could take into account other meanings of those words.

Mad = insane, Bad = poor, and Sad = pathetic.

How do those traits apply to the characters? It's fun to think about! English is a wonderful language.

Гомэстaр Руннэр - Homestar Runner
Стронг Бaд - Strong Bad
Пом Пом - Pom Pom
Мaжіпaн - Marzipan
Стронг Мaд - Strong Mad
Тгэ Хэaт - The Cheat

Цоaх З - Coach Z
Бубс - Bubs
Тгэ Кінг оф Тоўн - The King of Town

Гомсaр - Homsar

Cyrillic. not a true translation, you can see. just a different alphabet.

It's actually consonant combinations at the beginning of a word that you place at the end.

...And then add "ay".

As a polish speaker, I can tell you that Silne Złe is a very bad translation. It should be Silny Zły.

Here are some Swedish translations for you:

Homestar Runner: Hemstjärna Löpare
Strong Bad: Stark Elak (or Stark Dålig but Elak is more correct)
Strong Mad: Stark Arg
Strong Sad: Stark Ledsen
The Cheat: Cheaten (or if you translate cheat as well: Fuskaren)
Coach Z: Tränare Z (but coach is actually quite common as a title in sweden today)
Marzipan: Marsipan
The King of Town: Stadens Kung
The Poopsmith: Bajssmeden

Bubs and Pom Pom would just be the same and I have no idea how to translate Homsar.

I'd translate it as Hemmsärna, but I'm far from proficient in Swedish.

Ok. Bit obscure. In Luxemburgish (technically this is a language, though it may be considered a dialect of german containing french words) the names are:
Strong Bad-Staark Schlecht
Homestar Runner-Heemstaer Leefer
Strong Mad-Staark Rosen/Staark Verreckt
Strong Sad-Staark Traureg
The Cheat-De Fuddeler
The KoT-De kinneg vun der Staat
Poopsmith-Schaiss Schmatt
Coach Z-Trainer Z (phonetically-Trainer Tsett)
Senor Cardgage-I'm not even going to try translating.
The rest stay pretty much the same.

The names sound really stupid when you translate them to Finnish, believe me. I'll post them anyway.

Homestar Runner - Kotitähti Juoksija
Strong Bad - Vahva Paha (as in "evil" or "cruel") / Vahva Huono (as in "bad in quality")
Strong Mad - Vahva Hullu (as in "insane") / Vahva Vihainen (as in "angry")
Strong Sad - Vahva Surullinen
The Cheat - Huijaus (blech)
Coach Z - Valmentaja Z
King of Town - Kaupungin Kuningas
Marzipan - Marsipaani
The Poopsmith - Kakkaseppä ("Poop Blacksmith", can't think of a better translation)

Those were... really, really dumb and bad. Those names are pretty hard to translate.
