Is he actually friends with Stu? I didn't know that.

THE PLOT THICKENS.

Tell me if you remember this one... One of our users managed to acquire an administrators password (most likely through a website of his own). He took that password, logged on and proceeded to cause a certain amount of mayhem. How does that compare to a couple dozen spam messages over the course of an hour or so (a task relatively easily fixed by the MODS). Somehow that isn't worth a permaban? Seriously, what the hell?

Wait, what

Hey, okay, here's the deal. We've actually been talking with Stu for the last day or so, more or less working on getting him up to speed on things. He admits to not being around like he used to, and he doesn't like being out of sync too too much. What I see with what happened here, Rusty, is that Stu was trying to do what he used to in helping things run better. I actually remember us the modmins getting upset over gostse in recent times, although apparently in more recent times we've been lax on the matter. I think we still would prefer people to not have it as some sort of their profile, but I mean talking about it sans linking is fine.

To everyone around the forum, the modmins are working hard lately to get ourselves on the same page on all the rules and workings of this place, we really are. We'd appreciate it if every little discrepancy did not merit public outrage. Things happen, like Stu coming back for a few days to see what's going on.

And he threatens to ban me because of that.

I thought you guys didn't like it when he came in and tried to force his KB stuff on you? What happened to that?

The problem is, with the exception of maybe 4chan and yaoi, everyone knows what those things are and should expect to find offensive results if they actually search it. A couple years ago, I definitely wouldn't know what goatse is, and I probably would've looked it up if I had read it in a profile field like that...

I dunno if you can make a blanket statement like that - you can't guarantee that some kid is going to come here, that has never even heard of some of the stuff listed there, and be confused and google it.

It can happen, and Goatse is the same way.

No you wouldn't have, you'd have asked someone on the forum what it was, and someone would tell you.

Also this.

"A couple"? 28 is not a couple. And it was much longer than an hour, if you count second account and RT crap.

edit: Guys. On the "you don't know" thing. I've known what Goatse was since I was 10 years old. We can't shelter people from everything.

Stu is also up to date on this, at least last he was on he was. Stu's aware of what jello did vs. what Lahi did vs what Rusty did.

I'm pretty sure he's friends with at least one administrator.

That's better. Just sounds like he was going by what Lahi told him in that above message.

Yes. I said that.

The thing is though, this place is apparently for people of all ages. Heck, we have 12 year old regulars on here. I'm sure that many of the younger users, as well as some of the less internet-savvy users, wouldn't recognize many of those words on that list. I don't think Little Billy knows what to expect when going into Encyclopedia Dramatica, or 4chan, or even Lemon Party (not even I knew what this was until somebody linked to it in Random Thoughts). Being fifteen now, I know that I wouldn't have recognized "camel toe", or "loli", or even "necrophilia" a few years ago unless I Google-searched it. The same could be said for "hippie" (I didn't expect to see some of the Google Images I saw until a few days ago), "menopause", "orgy", "pedophile", etc.

So yeah, there's different internet-experienced people on here of a variety of ages, and I made that post with Rusty through MSN to show that we've been using many of these words here extensively for years.

We're not being butt-hurt. We're being rational; Rusty has been dying to come back to this place for a month, so it was kind of a shocker to him when Stu wouldn't unban him (he didn't get unbanned until nearly the next day). Now he is told to remove something from a nearly-invisible portion of his profile, when people having been using that word and sixty-one others (from my list, at least :P) on this Forum tens--possibly hundreds--of times.

It's just that there needs to be an even playing field here; we need an ironed-out version of the rules to put everyone on the same level with offenses. I can understand the part about Stu not knowing how lax this place is now while wanting to be a bit more regular here, but in the near future, we just need a bit of change to get things running fluently.

When you're trying to enforce a rule like this, you should keep two things in mind:
1) Every website, image, etc., considered offensive that is mentioned on site should be assumed to be equally as harmless as the next.
2) Every member has equal knowledge about the subjects.
It's not true, but it's fair.

Gonzo is now a Meme.

Also, we're not complaining about rules, the rules are fine the way they are.

Has anyone actually experienced or seen selective modding?

True, but part of the reason this issue came up was because of Stu's older interpretation of the rules, when we've been past that strict of rules for some time.

COLA: I think that's the point of the topic, actually, with Stu apparently picking and choosing.

Okay, I think that Stu wouldn't unban you because he didn't want to get all up in ramrod's grill on the matter if ramrod had something in mind. I mean, he obviously didn't even know it was a temp ban, and like you said, ramrod wasn't on, so he probably just wanted to be sure what happened before he did anything. I mean, for example's sake, what if lahi went to Joey and said "hey, my temp-ban's up now" what would Joey do?

Selective in what way?
You were asked to remove something offensive from your profile.

I'm sure, at least the second time I tried to get him to un-ban me, he knew my time was up. I mean, come on.

So Stu's idea of keeping an eye on someone is to look at their profile. Oh noes!

I think everyone needs to take a chill pill. We're talking to Stu about this, AND we're already in the process of getting ourselves on the same page.

I thought he'd changed it, though.
