I propose that we replace R&P with a new section where people can have debates and opinionated discussions on everything, not just religion & politics. I call this section Soap Box.

Thoughts? Concerns? Objections?

I sorta like the idea, but I still have one problem, and that is what to do with normal Religion and Political discussions that are not debates (such as the prayer chain thread). And if this means moving all those types of topics to OSD, it might be a lot of work for moderators and I don't know if I'd want to see all those in Off-Subject Discussion.

Could make a new section called "Heated Debates about Stuff" or something...

Opinionated discussions as what? like weather or not Part two of a game is better than part one? Or who would be a better leader,Pac-man or Mrs. Pac-man? Because discussions like that would belong in Off-Subject Discussion.

I'm talking about current events and issues and such. Those don't necessarily fit under religion or politics.

But you said Debates that are about everything, not just about Religion and politics, And those two dont go under the category of R&P. So basically, what your asking is that we rename the R&P board to SoapBox.

I'm proposing to rename it to Soap Box to allow for serious discussions on topics such as science, philosophy, and current events as well as R&P.

Science and Philosophy are considered Religious debate. One could be talking about why some South American Toads are posionous, and one could bring up the assumption that God made them that way so they could live without fear. Philosophy is also religious because i could say that Since time is the 4th dimension, we are all trapped in it, and one could suggest that God could change the time and date to prove himself. So basically, No name change is needed due to the reasons i just pointed out.
And as for current events, Not very many people here care to know about things such as Britney dumping K-Fed.

I was referring to Current Events that actually matter.

Such as Democrats taking the house? an Earthquake? The War in Iraq? Those are all Current events, and they all revolve around Politics.

What does an earthquake have to do with politics?

Governments reaction/response time, If the local government had any sort of preparations for one, And if you want to think religious, Asking for peoples prayers. Also if the Red cross actually made a difference in the people who lost homes and business.

What about sports? Or eating disorders?

The point is, COLA, not all current events are about R&P, so they should be in a group along with other serious discussions.

Depending on what sort of effects Eating disorders have on people, that could easily go into OSD, Same with sports, Unless your talking about what the government is going to do about Steroids in Baseball and other sports. And If you just want to know what people think about eating disorders in general, that could go into polls, or even better in OSD. Now unless someone makes a topic called "do you think god watches homestarrunner?", i guess we could have a use for such a board, but someone, even a newb of the highest caliber, wouldn't make a thread about that.

I propose maybe we should somehow add in the title/description "And other serious discussion". That way things like the prayer chain thread can stay where it is, but other topics like one about eating disorders or whatever can go there, too.

I agree with ed. R&P has pretty much already morphed into a "Serious discussion/debate" thread, despite it's name. A simple description change or addition will work fine.

I have always thought of the R&P section as a place for any sort of serious discussion. The term Religion and Politics just refer to two of the most common sources of said serious debate. I don't know that we'll be adding a new forum any time soon (or changing the name/description of any either).

If you are concerned about where to post something, just ask a mod (or admin). Or you can just post it and if it is in the wrong spot it will get moved.

I always viewd it the same way. R&P is like a universal serios discussion symbol.
