Honestly, children, I'm up in arms about this one. Why is it filtered? It's an acronym. It can stand for dang well anything. This forum is filtered heavily enough, we don't need mean-anything acronyms to be filtered too.

It may be a "mean-anything" acronym, but if I understand correctly, the reason it was filtered is because its most commonly used meaning was "Go away you stupid filthy retard! Nobody wants you here!"

But there has been discussion in the Mod board about its possible removal. I do not know what the status of it is among the higher ups, though.

But by that logic we should censor things like "jerk", too. A lot of people don't care if someone tells them to gee tee eff oh, and if someone does, then we can handle it in the way being discussed in "Ladies and Gentlemen" right now.

Yeah, you brought this up at a good time - a lot of us mods have been pushing for its removal recently. I can't remember if Ram's said anything on the subject, but his approval is really all that's necessary (None of the senior admins are gonna care about a simple filter change, especially if it's one Ram and Sree put in themselves)

I didn't say it was absolutely needed, only that - if I understand correctly - it's why it was initially done. Remember, I don't have admin privileges, so I didn't put it in.

I myself am a firm believer that context is the key to understanding any term. If someone is being a jerk toward someone else, I think most of the mods here are smart enough to know that and step in.

Whoa whoa whoa, that's a pretty extreme inference to make from "GTFO".

As was said, it's a coincidence that you would bring this up; we've been discussing it for the past few days.

Except GTFO was always used with hostility.

Anyways I support it. Acronyms, as Mike said, can stand for anything.

Well, if we are censoring it because of what f stands for, then things like wtf should be censored too. If we are censoring it for the fact that it's a because of the anger implied in it, then that makes sense. I mean, it's in the rules:
Quote:
In general, we expect users to treat each other with courtesy and respect.

As Didy said, that is the reason it was initially censored. But we're able to moderate other forms of disrespect and anger towards other user, why not this? And the fact that it can be used in a manner that's not disrespectful (jokingly, for instance) means that it being censored can be a nuisance.

Oh, I know, I didn't mean that directly towards you, I should've made that clearer. I'm not arguing against any particular person, I'm just arguing against the idea itself

I think that the mods are saying that it's kindof a rude saying (which it is) and that CERTAIN PEOPLE might find it offensive if you say it, even if you say it in a nonchalant, messing-with-you kindof way (which is how most of us use it), because tones like that don't translate over the web very well.

However, I do think it should be unfiltered, though under Inverse's offensive content thing in Ladies and Gentlemen.

I never liked the idea of censoring it to begin with. (But then, I never liked the idea of filtering anything to begin with.)

Hear hear. In the much larger scope of things, if you asked people to exercise self restraint when posting the amount of swearing would be fairly minimal. I would certainly enjoy being able to say "s to the hit" without breaking Rule 6.

Guys, this is sort of a family friendly forum. So, while I don't support the censorship of acronyms, you gotta realize that some cursing just can't be used here.

I didn't say anything about Rule 6. I don't oppose that, I just oppose the autocensoring. For one thing, some people rely on the filter being there and then they end up saying things that slip through the filter.

I advocated autocensoring the worst words, mainly because it takes a load of work off of the moderators, and it makes it so people won't be able to make an obscure post with a swear that might slip through.

Unless they were to, I dunno, stick some tags in there, like-a GTFO! If that still works, I dunno.

But yeah. Shouldn't be filtered. I mean, nothing should be filtered, ever, but this one's particularly inane.

I have to agree with Kef and Ace on some points. I do think the worst words should be censored, but I also feel that the members themselves just really ought to watch what they say. Relying too much on the censor to edit your language for you I don't think really helps the overall atmosphere and decorum we're trying to maintain.

In fact, at one time, the policy was that, even if the censor caught it, the Admins would still warn users about language, and even take action against those who overused it. That policy was somewhat relaxed a few months back. It was thought that once people get the idea what was censored, they'd stop using those terms. Unfortunately, it seems the opposite happened: people began using more profanity rather than less.

Personally, while I know it's an acronym that could mean anything, we all know what it means, and the fact of the matter is simply that it's used much more often in the hateful sense of the term than the playful ribbing sense of the term. I am, however, in favor of changing what the censor changes it to. Somehow, "don't go away angry, just go away" doesn't ring with me right. To me, that's almost on the same exact level, just without swearing. Which is better, I suppose, I just would prefer something different.

At the very least I'd rather it be censored to "get out" or "get the crap out". GTFO is just really awkward.

But awkwardness is the core principle of this society.

And to think that I thought I wouldn't be able to fit in around here.

If we're really just shooting for awkward, we should make it be something like "I think about harming little animals" or anything to that effect.

Just change it to "I will never get laid".

Wait, that's been done already?

Dang.

It's a well-known fact that SI has the best emoticons and word filters in existence.
