This would be painful for the modmins, but this would be good for people on this forum who don't play video games…

It's been a long time since I've posted this idea.

Yes or <insert horribleville frames here>?

I would like a video game thread. Video games are slightly clogging off-topic, and I like to talk about video games.

edit: 7 video game topics on page one of off topic.

I don't really think that's necessary. On the first page, I count 8 video games threads, many of which overlap with topics not video game related. 8/30 is not that big of a proportion - that's really not "clogging" in any way - and 8 threads is certainly not enough to warrant its own board. So I don't think this is going to happen. Just ignore the video game threads, that's what I do with threads I don't read. There aren't really that many.

Don't see a point. If enough people want it, though, it would take like thirty seconds to make.

I think it's a good idea. If got made, a lot less vidya threads would get buried.

That could be said for any type of thread.

If someone wants to add to it, they can bump it.

Well, what other types of threads are there? I'm seeing the majority of them being for the vidjas.

8 is not greater than 22.

What I meant was, less video game threads becoming inactive isn't a very good reason for making a video game board.

No, what I'm saying is, you've got a good bunch of them for video games. Then there's two for teevee, two for movies, and the rest are...pluugh.

It'd take longer to find all the threads and move them... If we did do it, though, I'd rather have it be a subforum.

A subforum is a pretty neat idea.

Also, I would just move the currently active game threads, and let people recreate the ones that are old, but they still want them around.

If we had a place for video game discussion, it would probably spark more discussion for people that want to talk about it, so more topics might be made.
Although, if this happens, I predict a few threads with high posts (Guitar Hero/Smash Bros.) and a ton with like, 5 posts…

I support the idea, though.

Well, I think if this went through, big things like Smash would be stickied.

If there is a new board made for video games, then I could see many lesser-known series emerging as threads (maybe a Cruis'n USA/World/Exotica thread, or even a Space Station Silicon Valley thread? :P ). However, as Chekt mentioned, I could see a lot of these threads having only five or so posts in them before becoming unpopular.

There's also the fact that several larger threads could still be made to cover more obscure or retro games, though this could potentially lead to a lot of repeated subjects over time.

I'm not sure what to say for this. Part of me wants to say "yes" to making a new section, but that part would probably like to see more specific-subject sections in that case.

Well, the problem with having one thread for everything is that people will be right in the middle of something, and you may want to bring up a game, and it'll kind of de-rail the conversation being had.

And I don't see a huge deal with threads with five posts.

Video game threads aren't taking up that much space like old forumfics did in off-topic.

That's not what we're saying, I think. I think what's being said is, if a Video Games forum or subforum were to be made, it would spark more discussion. Which I think would be a good thing.

Also, less pressure on the "I don't know if this thread is Okay it might get like four posts and then drop" or just hesitation to post a topic - it's a video game subforum, so discussion about the least noticeable of games should be okay.

I like the idea of a subforum. But giving video games their own subforum could lead to even more suggestions of subforums - music, TV, movies, books, etc. And then the argument would be, "But video games got their own section!"

^Exactly.

Also, It may be a good idea, but what would be the point? If you don't have the balls tomake a thread about any off-topic subject in Off-Topic Disscussion, then what makes you think you'll have teh balls to make one in a Video Games Sub-Forum?

Because a Videogame Subforum is more inviting to individual threads about games that normally might not make it to ten posts in Off Subject.

Why not? Seriously, guys, just try it. It couldn't be that bad.

I'm all for this idea, simply because I want a Doom thread where I can post my custom WADs, and encourage other users to make their own and pass them on. But I have yet to see enough evidence that warrants a board's creation. We got Arts and Crafts because at one point, 2/3rds of the page in OSD was just Forum Fics, (Horrible ones, Although some good ones too) and it was like that because Forum Fics were fadsthen. It was "hip" to make one. But theres not much involved in video game threads other than "lol, frndcode plz" or "i think doomguy/freeman/cheif is a pretty cool guy," and there isn't much appeal in that. Now, if we were to include threads on PC game mods and stuff, and game editing and stuff like that, programming, then there would be an appeal.

But since we have A&C, it kind of defeats the purpose of those threads.

Hmm, I was about to suggest a subforum, but some people raised good points. I'd be cool with anything you guys decide, though. Butterscotch knows I don't post enough for it to affect me much. =3

Why bother? It seems unnecessary.

I say go for it. There are tons of vidjagame threads over there, why not segregate 'em?

I vote subforum.

I think if this were added, we deserve a sports forum too (having only one subforum looks weird anyways). Also, the reason I'd rather have it be a subforum than a regular one is because I think it's really irritating when I visit a forum for a specific subject only to see forums for other specific subjects all over the place. But it sounds like most people would prefer a subforum anyways.

I wouldn't mind this, but there still might be some downsides. If there got to be too many subforums, there would be more threads posted in the wrong forum to move and get lost, and it would be more pages to check. But we'll see. There hasn't really been any mod discussion on this. (If anyone wants to know the updated numbers, if you exclude stickies and spam threads, 10 of the 24 topics on the first page are probably VG-related...)

And then we'll need a tv subforum, and a music subforum, and it'll just get out of hand. Fact is, I don't think there's enough of any one topic for their to be a whole other board for it.

Well, then, make the tv, music, and sports subforums. They'll generate more conversation and keep things a little less cluttered.

By the way, if this thread is any indication, there's a bigger demand for a Vidja Game subforum than anything else.
