Quote: I'm not even going to edit this to make it shorter. You all should read it at least twice. I love Ace a lot. Quote: He is pretty dreamy. I'm having a hard time knowing how to respond to these posts nicely. Let's just say some people aren't quite grasping a major aspect of this thread. Quote: The best we can do is choose policies and enforce rules that make it a fun place to be for the majority. Saying "you all can pack up and leave" is not a viable argument if a great number of people (not just people, people who have been here a LONG time and should thus have some respect) want a change in rule enforcement policy. I figured this new policy was confirmed for all of us when "Ladies and Gentlemen" occurred. I figured this was now going to be a democratically run forum with the leaders still enforcing rules, but rules that allow for a pleasing environment for the majority. But some of these responses, both public AND on the Moderator Forum, worry me. Pure democracy is a horrible idea. What if 200 new users signed up with the intent of turning the forum into a porn-sharing location? Would you acquiesce to the demands of the majority in that case? Like I said before, there needs to be someone in charge who is intent on keeping the forum a friendly place. Banning the use of "GTFO" is part of that. Quote: So are Ace, Ninti, etc. Like I said, you're the only one I remembered. I guess you made an impression. |

That Haiku chick, (Who was just a mod puppet, i think...) Was driven off because I told her to GTFO. She could have been good. But we'll never know! Also, Lahi, we can't ban the use of GTFO, it would the same affect as banning LOL or OMG. |

This is the Internet. Keeping someone from being a jerk is an impossible task. |

Just saying "GTFO" wouldn't really get me mad or thinking someone was a jerk. It goes deeper than just GTFO, its about pretty much berating a user to the point of leaving, i suppose. |

lahimatoa wrote: Pure democracy is a horrible idea. What if 200 new users signed up with the intent of turning the forum into a porn-sharing location? Would you acquiesce to the demands of the majority in that case? Uh no. First of all a huge base of new users like that would not be accepted by the majority of people nor would they be allowed to preach their demands to the forum. That'd be like a mass influx of immigrants coming into the country with the intent to elect corrupt officials or whatever. They have to be citizens before they can have heavy influence in the way things are run. Not to say new users' opinions do not matter at all, but demanding something like what you suggested would warrant some understandable watching. Secondly, and much more importantly, I never said there were going to be absolutely no standards. In fact I believe I stated that the moderators WOULD indeed enforce their own rules at times. [And even Serious Inc has rules against porn sharing and that has a reputation for "anarchy"] I'm saying the people should have somewhat of an influence on what policies are enforced and what aren't. We can't just throw random rules out there and say "That's the way it is if you don't like it leave". Well, we can, but not many people would like it, many people probably WOULD leave, and the forum would eventually die off. As BTG said, we can be fascist mods, but no one wants to see that. Banning the use of GTFO or other such things might be nice for some people but would be irritating or annoying to others. |

Heres a though: Where, in the last oh...say... ten days, has the phrase "GTFO" been uttered anywhere else except in this thread? |

Most recent use "in general" Most recent use "directed at a user" Both were yesterday. The second one is kind of weak since it was egged on... Most recent "blatant direction of GTFO at someone". May 10. 4 Days ago. Sorry, COLA. This gives me an idea we should have a "GTFO" counter that says like "6 DAYS SINCE LAST USE OF GTFO" like those cliche "20 DAYS SINCE LAST ACCIDENT" signs or something is this cool y/n |

Choc-o-Lardiac Arrest wrote: Heres a though: Where, in the last oh...say... ten days, has the phrase "GTFO" been uttered anywhere else except in this thread? Yes. But again, the general gist of "GTFO" can be seen in other words/phrases. Quote: Banning the use of GTFO or other such things might be nice for some people but would be irritating or annoying to others. I have yet to see anyone give a logical reason why they should be allowed to say "GTFO" to anyone in a serious way. Also, the forum cannot be all things to all people. JoeyDay and other mods have made it clear they do not want this to be a place where other users are driven off by unfriendliness. In this case, they cannot make the forum a place for people interested in driving others off AND a place where friendliness is encouraged. |

Heres a question, why are we arguing whether we can use GTFO or not when we can just go on and have a discussion elsewhere in another thread about whatever topic that thread is about? I mean, seriously, why are we all in a huff over GTFO? Its just an acronym. |

Or if they're complaining about what the acronym stands for because it may potentially contain vulgarity, I think that's a waste. Tackle the meat, people. Ace wrote: Most recent use "directed at a user" Both were yesterday. The second one is kind of weak since it was egged on... Well, in my case it was a joke and we both knew it. Good clean fun. |

Its pretty much an argument of "We should welcome all users" masked as "No more GTFO." But why are we arguing about it when we pretty much do give all new users a chance before they either get accepted or make a rear-end of themselves. |

Brass tacks, if we remove everything its more than likely this, but I'm not sure: Lahi wants things his way, we don't so Lahi makes a thread complaining about something inane just so he can complain about other users while it still being constructive and not against the rules. However, its more than likely a struggle for power within ourselves, that we want something like this to happen, that we want this place to be a better place, but that we can't let it because we've been berated with the worst of the worst new users before, (Considering we're the GateWay to the internet; all who are new will eventually pass through us), that we don't accept most other new users who may actually be cool people in the long run. In the end, we see it all as just an outlet so we can say "Hey, I hate you, Leave." |

I agree. Convert our new users to our way of life, so that they can be saved in the long run. Make the newbs feel awesome, even if they're not really. |

We can't make them feel awesome, we don't like most of them. Also, are we talking about the KB boards or just the Lower Boards? |

Lower. Like, people who care enough to post an introduction, people who don't exclusively post in HR and Forum Games. |

Why are we arguing about change in the lower boards without getting the KB board's input on it? Its not all about us, they're apart of this forum too. |

Seriously, when I started regularly posting here there was NOTHING BUT love. There was no sassiness, no punkishness, only one comment that I shouldn't type in purple... I've experienced a lot on this great internet of ours... I've never been MORE accepted and MORE loved. Y'all are freaking amazing, which is why it astounds me that people can complain about it. Yes, even RUSTY, who seems to have a horrible rep, made me totally love him instantly. It's just like, yeah... I can see where it can be tough for people who have sticks up their butts about everything, but ultimately... This place rocks. |

COLA, we discuss it here because there is very rarely any conflict or strife or "GTFO" or such things in the Homestar Boards. The audience there is much nicer, in a way. This argument is really irrelevant to them, as they are here purely for the Homestar discussion and will likely not notice a change in the rules like "no more saying go away" because they pretty much never do it anyway. Also I figured we've given plenty of new users a long chance to get to know how the community is and insert themselves and have a good time. Look at Abu. A lot of people have told him to GTFO but he's gutted it out and is now a fairly competent user. If you just stop caring what people say about you on the internet, and work to improve yourself, you'll be cool. |

Thread over, Ace figured it out and said it. This place IS like high school in the fact that you have to prove your worth. Some will falter at the thought, and some will even give up after trying once, but those who stick it out turn out great in the end. Also, Tefee, we accepted you instantly due to your diction, your not "lol, i luvvv homestar " attitude, and your general acceptance of us.
