| Post subject: | Forum-specialized moderators |
I noticed that over our forums we have the same 5 moderators, apparently über moderators for that matter. What I've seen in other forums is that some have unique moderators- like, for instnace, a video game community- people who specialize for each game and hang around that forum. I'm thinking it's plausible for some of our more respected members to be assigned as moderators for maybe one or two forums that they perhaps lurk around more often. They could look at each a little more carefully. Some people might be more knowledgeable about the history of certain forums, such as helping redirect to older topics in their home forum that most others didn't know existed. That would ease it slightly on the administrators who might be more concerned with looking at, say, the suggestions/decision polls- the business stuff. Just a thought. |

I agree. JoeyDay, Tom, AgentSeethroo, Stu, InterruptorJones still moderate all the forums, but like someone who is unbiased could moderate the Religion and Politics as well. And someone who is nice and helpful to newbies could moderate the "Getting to Know You" forum and move the "I'm New Here" threads to the Spam Vault. And someone with good MediaWiki and phpBB knowledge could moderate the HelpDesk. |

This forum is getting big for just five people to moderate, but don't fix it if it's not broken. |

Awexome. Very awexome. (Sorry, I know, off-topic, but I couldn't let this one pass by.) |

I cannot begin to explain how much I agree with Jones' last post. He said it infinitely better than I could have. InterruptorJones wrote: Even if our personal biases did play some role, our beliefs themselves are often completely opposed in some cases. Poli-sci majors call that "checks and balances". This was intentional on my part. I've tried to bring a high level of diversity to our admin staff. To date, there are two Evangelicals, a Mormon, an atheist, and an agnostic (forgive me if I got one or both of those last two wrong). If I've fallen short on diversity, it is probably in age group (i.e. all our admins are over the age of 20). No one from the younger population is represented. I wish I could've done this differently, but I honestly don't feel that anyone under 18 should have the kind of responsibility I've given to our current admins. I just about peed my pants when I read this. Awexome. |

I guess you've stated your reasons and they're pretty legit. But a part of what prompted me to reading this, well I saw of course there are 5 moderators and noticed that til recently, InterruptorJones was the only one I'd really seen post. Checked when and where the last posts were, and the moderators' presence seems sort of....scarce. Like I don't recognize the names so well. (Welcome back JoeyDay! And congrats on your wedding!) Maybe you all read way more than you post, but with other forums as a benchmark the presence of the unique moderators is quite well known. (like 13 diff. mods in a forum with 450 members, maybe 250-300 active) Just a thought, not that it's out of control or anything. Thanks for clearing it up. |

Actually, you are somewhat correct. I've been scarce lately because of my wedding, but I'm back now (and slowly picking up some speed again). Stu has been scarce lately for his own reasons. It's kindof personal, but it's posted here in public if you know where to look -- I won't say anything more. Jones is a zealot on the forums (and I mean that in the nicest way possible). He makes the rest of us look bad. You don't see a lot of activity from Tom here because he mostly sticks to the wiki -- and let me say that over on the wiki he's invaluable. Seethroo has been pretty active lately -- he's filling in his new role quite nicely. LunarJesters is pretty active over on the fanstuff wiki, and I'll be adding a new sysop to the fanstuff wiki soon. LunarJesters has been an experiment of sorts. He's the first moderator that I haven't given total access privileges to. If that continues to work out, I may in the future create openings for sub-admins/moderators. I'm still playing things by ear, and so far we haven't had any major problems that warrant additional admins/mods. I do appreciate your helpful suggestions and I will try to be sensitive to what our community perceives as legitimate needs. If enough people cry out for additional moderators, I would love to comply. So far we haven't had such an uprising. |

I don't think each forum should list the mods underneath it... They're all the same! But the mods here do a better job of keeping spam away and respecting everyone than at any other forum... |

Hmmm... perhaps we can use the certain moderators for certain topics! I'm just suggesting, not going," *cough* ME! *cough* " Besides I wouldn't want to be a moderator, I'd have to be too busy. |
