Well, I've seen a couple, the two below this topic, as well as one other from early May 04 when I browsed through old topics. It's my thought that when a topic is necro'ed or rezz'd or even bump'd- more or less, an old topic brought back to the front, it should be locked but not moved to the Spam Vault. Looked for those to have a good basis and somehow didn't find many, but I'm pretty sure I've seen several instances of old topics that were resurrected for no good purpose. Locking them is a good idea, it prevents the excessive clutter. However, they seem to be good reference for the future and ought to at least be left in that particular forum, so all our next of kin can see that if need be, rather than have to crawl through the Spam Vault, where locked topics of many other subjects can confuse. I guess you could say it's changed to a "read-only" topic. Any thoughts? |

That might be a good idea, Everettimmy, if it weren't for the fact that users would have to wade through pages and pages anyway as topics get buried. The Spam Vault isn't only for spam - it's kind of a misnomer that way. It's also for threads that have just died, and threads that are no longer relevant (like the Robot Day thread). That's just my two cents, though. See what others have to say. |

If you lock it, you might as well put it in the spam vault. |

Hmm maybe I didn't make it clear. Fairly major threads that are rezzed and locked ought to be left be in the respective forum for easier reference. That way, people don't have to wade through the spam vault to look for a topic. There aren't many of these, but they happen. As with easy reference, it's just in case someone walks back through pages, or it is linked to, from another thread. |

But the locked topics would sink far into the pages of a particular forum, so few people would see them. |

Also, should we maybe rename the Spam Vault? Not all of the topics are spam, just locked topics. We could change it to "Locked Topics" or something like that. |

The spam vault is what it the name says... a forum (or sub-forum if you want to call it that) for holding topics that are out of line. Why would you ever want to lock a thread that is still useful to someone? Even if it was originally posted in 1965? Perhaps that user wasn't around when the original topic was posted, and they have a question regarding the topic that wasn't answered in the original replies. I would rather see them utilize an already existing thread (where many of their potential questions could have already been answered) then start a brand new thread asking the same freakin questions all over again. Just my thoughts... |

Yeah, that's what I don't understand. When someone makes a new topic that has already been posted, it gets locked. But when they resurrect a really old topic, it gets locked. |

Locking old topics only happens when the newest post doesn't contribute anything or bring up any new points. Resurrecting an email thread just to say "It was good! Twelve The Cheats out of sixteen King of Towns!" is the kind of thing that can get a thread locked. Especially if it's followed by a whole lot of posts like "Way to necromance, n00b" and "Talk about a bump". Resurrecting a thread when you have a new point of view or maybe a missed easter egg or something is completely okay. |

I think it's unfortunate that good topics end up going off-track and getting lock'd. It would probably be a lot of work for our mods, but ideally only bad individual posts and a few obsolete threads would have to be locked or removed, instead of whole topics that contain useful info. |
