I think it whould be a good idea to have a "ding" noise for the chat to singnal incoming messages. There are a lot of us that like to have the chat running in the background while surf the web. A lot of times we end up missing people because they come and go because they think no one is active. If not that, at least put one in for pms, because a lot of people (including me) don't see incoming pms at first. I also think that you can add color and smileys to the chat, but those are really not needed.

So, does anyone else think this is a good idea?

It's a good idea, but I'm pretty sure it's impossible.

On the PJIRC website the parameters "soundbeep" and "soundquery" led me to think the incoming message noise and the pm noise were possible. I don't know if they can change it or not, but it seems to be possible.

Trillian does that (I don't usually use it though).

I don't have trillan though. And I only go to the wiki chat so it's not something thats really useful for me. And there are other people that don't have it, so it's not just me.

I mean there is no point in getting it because I'll never use it. It wouldn't be worth the trouble.

We're not going to change the Java chat client we have at chat.hrwiki.org. If it's even possible, it would be too much of a pain.

If you want a client that you can customize with beeps or dings or whatever, I recommend getting Trillian, mIRC, or any of the dozens of free IRC clients out there.

If it "isn't worth the trouble" for you to take the ten minutes to download and install a piece of free software that you're happy with, then it may not be "worth the trouble" for you to participate in the chat at all.

I'm very sorry that I suggested something that isn't possible, but is it worth biting my head of for?

No, but using the rolleyes emoticon and completely dismissing ed's perfectly valid suggestion because it "isn't worth your time" is.

The reason it's not worth my time is that to get permission to download somthing that is something that I can already use via the internet whould take weeks, I'm sorry if I sounded like a jerk.

You mean like ask a parent? How would that take weeks?

Ouch.....yeah it can be like that. You have to ask me permission to download stuff on the computer since I'm usually in charge of that, and a lot of times someone else'll doewnload something that screws it up, so I tend to be fairly strict.
You got other chat clients that probabaly would play a sound, other than Trillian, but it seems it's about the same amount of trouble. You might just need to learn to keep an eye on the chat channel, it's not that hard.
