I notice there has been a problem with oversized avatars. Since the only way to post these are by linking to an off-site avatar option. If the admins were to delete this option, the oversized avys would be a thing of the past. I know this would get rid of all of the rotating avatars, but it is something I can deal with.

It's not something I can deal with, I know that. I don't want to have to pick one avatar when I can have so many great ones all at once.

And really, oversized avatars aren't all that big of a problem, are they? I mean, you just let the person know that their avatar is too big, and they change it. It's no big deal.

Yeah but the thing is, they don't.

right.. They just complain about the rules and say "at this forum or that forum, they allow bigger avatars" or "But it's only 10 pixels", etc..

Is there a way that the "off site linked avvys" can have their sizes checked?

Who has an oversized avatar?

This guy does. It's not a huge epidemic or anything, though.

There have been a few others, it is mostly the H*R Rules guys who are doing it.

The thing is, if you ban offsite avatars, that puts more stress on out servers. At least when you have them on an offsite place, all the memory is on their server instead of ours. Imagine everyone here with an avatar that's 10kb each. That's a lot of memory.

And I won't be able to use my rota-TOR. :((

Sorry
I thought it was the right size (actually it wasn't far off) and I fixed it, thank you :sm: :sm:

Yeah, I wouldn't be able to use mine either. Nobody would.

It's not a huge enough problem that the mods need to take drastic action. Most of the time a simple reprimand works just fine.

Also, admins can simply delete an avatar if somone refuses to change it.

We can also permanently revoke someone's ability to display an avatar.

So? I say if they don't abide by some of the simplest rules, they'll just be a problem and break other rules, and it's better that they leave. If you're they're mad at this forum for not being like other forums, they should go to another forum, because if they have to be at a regular type foru, yhey're not gonna find happiness here.

Now, many people have oversized avatars and someone tells them to change it, and they do. I think that's good, I actually think having a way to let this rule get broken helps the forum? Why? It shows people the rules. When someone asks them to resize their avatr, they7 point them to the rulkes, which the new member reads, and now won't break another rule. This isn't a terrible rule to break, and it's a great first mistake. It probably helps new sers much more than it hurts them.

Plus, rotating avatars are greaty I don't think anyone wants to lose those.

My two cents.

Sorry, but it's true. And you had an oversized avatar at first as well.

EASY...

I don't think he was one of those complaining that the rules were too restrictive and stupid.
I think someone told him to change his, and he did. I could be wrong, though.

I'm just trying to put out the flames before the war starts here, peoples...

Don't make me lock this topic (I happen to find it somewhat informative for our newer users)

Wow.. Stu, that was a better smack down than I thought I was laying.
Guess that's why you're a mod, and I'm just a "the guy on the couch."
You're right, though. New people CAN learn something. If your sig or avatar is too big, and someone tells you it is, make it smaller! If you can't, ask someone, most of us have, at least, mediocre, skills with GIMP or Photoshop, and we'll be glad to help ya out.

Actually, if you have ANY questions, feel free to ask.
Yes, I do know the meaning of life. No, I'm not going to tell you. People hate spoilers.

The only issue I REALLY have with avatars that are too big are the ones that are 10-15 or more pixels too big. Still, rules ARE rules, and 100x100 and 10K is the biggest avvy you can have.

Thanks Stu and StrongRad. I, as a person that wasn't aware of this rule, agree that this topic is informative for new users. (I changed my oversized avitar within a few hours by the way)

The animosity directed at other forums just makes me sad. We all are here for the same reason, and we should band together. Sure we have had a couple delinquents that posted here, but there have been a poster or two that didn't go over nicely over at H*rules either. I came here and discovered that most of the posters here are really cool, and I'm sure that you would discover the same thing about us. Please don't group me, or any other H*rulers, in with one or two troublemakers that may have offended you.

I like to think that we (the rulers, if you will, of hrwiki.org) rule fairly. We don't try to single out users unless they have given us reason to single them out. This goes both ways, good or bad.

Now for my little off-topic venture... needle dog, your avatar is really freaking me out :D (in a weird internet forum sorta way)

I don't think it's necessary (or likely) to remove the ability to link to off-site avatars. I send out at least a few PMs a day to users violating the avatar and/or signature size limits, and most of the time the problem is that they just didn't know their image was too large. Unfortunately, many new users don't take the time to check the rules, but a friendly PM that links to the Rules thread is usually all it takes.

And, yes, there are those select few users who refuse to follow the rules, but they usually don't stick around for very long anyhow.

This topic really has me leaning toward including links to the Rules in the activation emails, though. It might cut down on the number of new users who don't notice the thread and inadvertently break the rules.

I like that idea, though I have to wonder how many people who can't be bothered to look at the rules on the forum would click on the link in the email. Still, it's a good idea, as it might set straight the few who would read the rules if they were more easily accessible (although, with them at the top of every forum page, I don't know how much more easily accessible they could be made).
