OK, I was trying to change my avatar to this --->Image but its 10011 bytes and it says it too much. could you raise the upload size to that?
(ps try and guess whats going on in that avatar.)

No. If everybody had an avatar that big, forum pages would take forever to load. If you want to use that avatar, use an image editing program to resize it to 100x100 pixels (the maximum dimensions) and it'll probably squeak under the 10kb limit.

Well, it's less than 150x150. Most forums I've been to allow that as a maximum limit.

But whatever, it's the staffers' decision.

It'd be bigger than the current width of the left pane, at least on my browser. That'd be annoying. Avatars are all funny and stuff, but the focus on the forum should be the posts, not the avatars. 100x100 is what I've seen as the limit in many forums, which is more than enough to convey whatever that is you are trying to convey.

Frankly I don't see the point of many of the avatars here anyway - lots of people just take random clips from random SB emails. What's the point? Yeah, you're a HSR fan, which is pretty much indicated by you being on the forum, so what other insight do those avatars provide?

I think of avatars as a mean to identify users. But I think it WOULD be annoying to have them too big, as the pages would load super slow......

How exactly do the avatars we have here identify their respective users?

Let me see what we have here:

- HSR
- The Cheat
- The Cheat
- HSR
- Strong Bad
- Strong Bad
- HSR
- Strong Mad
- HSR and Strong Bad

I hope you catch my drift :)

I know this is an old thread, but I couldn't find a newer one that related, sorry if this has already been posted on.

Anyway, along with the avatar upload size, there is a avatar dimension restriction at 100x100, which I know has been said, and perhaps it (dimensions) should be raised to 150x150. 150x150 is a pretty standard avatar size and it doesn't alter the tables all that much. Also, if you look at the table width for the users, it is set well over 150, so it would fit in there just fine. The size of the avatar doesn't necessarily make the image "intensive" rather than the amount of data that is in the avatar is what you need to worry about as for dealing with page loads. This can easily be restricted by simply limited the kb size of the avatars that you allow.

Furthermore, it's funny that there is restrictions on the avatar, yet there's no restriction on the size and/or width of someone's signature. For example, someone could have a signature width of 15,000 pixels, and it would still work in the signature field, which would REALLY through off the layout of the forum that you are reading.

There are a few hacks/mods that can be used to do this automatically if you'd like.

no worries on dredging up old topics...

As for the signatures, if we (the mods) notice something outrageous, in size or content, we have a little chat with the user.

As for avatar size, we already have enough trouble with our server just loading up text docs and the few small avatars. Adding more stress to the server isn't something we need to, or should be doing.

Another forum I follow (slightly) only allows avatars that are 80x80. That seems a little extreme to me. Anyway, in the end it really isn't that big of a deal. The important stuff here is the content of the topics. Avatars are fun, but that's about it.

I lot of the times to read posts and I see the avatar and I know it is the "Strong Mad kicking the Cheat User" automatically. I remember users by their avatars usually.
On the note of large avatars, who could forget big ole egg's mega egg avatar?

Oh - I guess it needed to be a *.gif first.

A GIF would likely have a greater file size.

I guess it just wasn't compressed. It's down to 6kb now. :sb:

Technically, 10KB isn't 10,000 bytes, it's 10,280 bytes.

I think it won't let you upload over 10,000 bytes, though.

How do you compress an image? My avatar is 9000 bytes too big :(

Try saving it as a .png.

thanks! I'll try it right now!

EDIT: I think it's working now. It showed a red x of doom, but I clicked "show picture" and it worked.

EDIT2: Nope. Not working :'(
