Ok, I'll admit it. I can't spell worth a damm.
So when I saw that fellow phpbb forum http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum has a spellcheck thingie built into their posting rountine, I just had to tell Homestar. But he's busy trying to make up with Marzipan, so I came here instaed.

How about it? Someone wanna brave the post-apocoliptic world of No Mutants Allowed to ask them how they got that nifty Spellcheck thing to work? I'll give you a cookie if you do. It's got nuts. And chocolate. mmm... chockolate. :)

We've actually talked about adding a spell check before.

Here and here.
As far as I can tell, the main reason we don't have one is that there are plenty of easy ways to check spelling.

Yes, but the fine folks at NMA have come uppon a seemeless way to integrate a spellchecker into the posting process. Yiou click "Specllcheck" and it brings up a spellchecker. I have to idea how they do this, I'm a hardware techie not a server admin.

You should try SpellBound. It's a Firefox extension that adds spell-checking to all forms in Firefox.

For any word I am not sure of, I use Google.

If it's so good, why isn't it up at https://addons.mozilla.org/ ?
Perhaps becasue it's still in Beta?

Beta doesn't always equate to bad. Plus a lot of the free software that we use relies on the feedback from "accidental" beta testers (guys like you and me, who try out their products and let them know of bugs).

Aint gonna happen. If you are unsure about a word and are using firefox, open a new tab and type "dict <unsure word>" where <...> is the word you are questioning. This will take you to dictionary.com and perform a search for the word you just typed in. Or you could do as previous users have suggested, and simply use google to check your spelling.

Look, I know I can export to another program via copy-and-paste. Your suggestion regarding dictionary.com is a non-starter: It's an online dictionary, not a spellchecking program. No ofense, but what part of "spellchecker" don't you understand?

I'm just asking you to investigate the posibility of adding this to your forum, OK? Just look into it; see how it could work. That's all. I'm not demanding a spellchecker, I'm just suggesting that you investigate the posibility of accessing this technology, OK?

Did you even try the spellcheker at NWM before you dismissed it?

I'm perfectly aware what a Beta is. I've Beta-tested my share of software, OK? I was just thinking that perhaps they haven't submited it to mozilla yet becasue it's too early in the Beta cycle.
Extensions in Firefox have to meet a very specific set of criteria before they will be allowed to be indexed on addons.mozilla.org. You can build whatever addons you want , but if they break the criteria in some way they won't get mozilla's stamp of apporval. This is an effort on mozilla's part to protect their Firefox users from badly-coded or conflicting extentions, while at the same time encouraging and supporting legitimate software developers who want to play by the rules.

Yes, I understand the difference between a specific spell checking program, and actually taking the time to try and better yourself by looking up the words on your own.

As for looking into, don't you think we have already? One of the first replies to this was a link to an older post with this same request. We looked into it then and decided against it. Not because of the program itself, but because of the nature of the program.

Everytime we install a mod or upgrade it makes maintaining this site that much more difficult. All of these upgrades require their own set of updates, and they can complicate matters when we try to update the forum software itself.

No ofense, but what part of "we aren't going to install a spellchecker" don't you understand?

You have to understand what I was going for there. Our average user age is somewhere around 12 years old. Even if you already knew what beta is, I imagine that we have opened someone else's eyes.

I don't know why SpellBound isn't at Firefox Add-ons, but it's definitely not a quality control issue--I have colleagues (by which I mean professional bloggers, i.e. people who spend the majority of each day typing into a little box on the web) who swear by it. There are actually quite a lot of first-rate extensions out there that, for whatever reason, aren't at Firefox Add-ons.
