Ok, it has become clear that this forum has a small problem with noobs posting new threds. So I have two ideas for at lest having a fewer of them.

One is, when you E-mail the activation link, also include a link to the "New Here? Post Your Intooductions" thread. Simple, but it might help

The other was used at another forum I went to. They somehow had it to where noobs couldn't make a new thread for 10 days. I myself dont know how to do this, but I can give you the creators' email address. just pm me for it.

So there is some options. If you don't like them, then you don't have to use them. But I feel that it is alos my responsabilaty to help out around here.[/i]

I very much like the first one. Much easier to prevent n00b spam.

I don't think we need to change our ways to deal with new users. If they spam, we lock it, they learn from their mistakes.

I like the first idea, and nmaybe if there was someway ton put a message at the top of the post a reply page that says "New here? Come post here!" or something like that for the first 10 or so replies made.

I don't like the idea of new members not being able to create topics for ten days. I'm pretty sure I have yet to actually create a topic on this forum but that's a little unusual. The idea just kind of sounds like an assumption that all new members will be inept and incompetant, which isn't really fair.

What I do think would be nice is an automatic PM to new members with a greeting from the staff and links to the introduction thread, a FAQ, the rules and any other important topics.

That'd be good, too, because I didn't even read my confirmation notice I just clicked the link and started looking around. Lyuckily I've been on the internet for about 7 years, so i know what to not do on a forum.

Even if New members couldnt post new topics, making them wait 10 days isnt going to make thier first thread anymore noobish then it would be. Maybe if there was some sort of post tutorial thingy.

This has nothing to do about the wiki. It's about the wiki fourum. I don't really like these ideas: I don't care if you spam once. "A fool is one who makes many mistakes, and in idiot is one who makes none."

There's no need to stop people from posting a new thread. They learn from their mistakes.

Besides, what if the said newbie has a valid thread idea in his first 10 days?

Because most newbies still make threads introducing themselves.

There's really nothing we can do about that. Most newbies actually use the right thread, too.

And has been mentioned before... we see these threads and generally merge them with the proper thread (and a message to the user explaining what happened).

And a PM wouldn't necessarily help, anyway. When I first joined, I didn't have any of the PM notifications (email or popup) turned on, so I had PMs sitting for days because I just didn't look up at the link. There are links to the FAQ and First Time Here pages at the top of each page, so if someone's gonna look up there, they may as well click on 'em.

New users are never going to stop making mistakes, and that's okay. We're more than a little tolerant to that kind of thing around here, in my opinion. We'll just deal with each case as it comes.

Yes, but we need to remember not to seem too rough when correcting the mistakes of newbies. I've seen people respond to personal introductory threads with things like "Ugh, what are you doing? Post it HERE!"

We need to seem friendly right off the bat. First impressions are very important.

I also think the idea of providing a link in the activation email to the New Here thread is a good idea. We could tell them once their accounts are activated they should click the link to that thread. It'd work out nicely, and we'd cut down on the personal intro threads, because they couldn't miss it, like they could a PM.

If it were up to me, that's what I'd do. But of course, it's not up to me. :)

You're right, Jitka. Everyone ought to be a little friendlier around here. I know that sometimes new users can be frustrating, but just remember how y'all felt when you were new. We don't want to seem unwecloming, right?

One thing that I'd like to say again, to whoever is reading this:
The New Here? thread quite often becomes a haven for three-word posts. "Welcome, so and so!" and that's it. That's annoying. If you want to send a personal welcome to a new user, please use the PM feature. It'll cut down on the unneeded posts in that thread, and also might make new users feel even more welcome, being "personal" and all.

About the link in the activation email, that might be a good idea, seeing as how many new users seem to overlook that thread. Hopefully Joey will take a look at this, or you could always PM the idea to him, Jitka.

Yeah, although when I first came here, Jello B. didn't welcome me, but called me names such as "spammer" and such. Then popped up Encountering Gremlins, who called me a troll for no reason since I am not a troll. COLA and Jello B. then make their Anti-Clan campaign and still have worshippers.

You see? People like COLA show a bad example for n00bs.

PM the n00b his/her mistake, then they'll try hard not to make that mistake again.

Geez, will you just quit it with the idea that I called you a troll for no reason? That's starting to get really annoying. I was only referring to the FIRST day you were here - no normal user posts over 100 times in the first 9 hour span they're here, many of those posts just repeating the same things over and over again. You act like I'm the only one ever to call you a troll (which I'm certainly not), and I've said you've gotten to be a much better poster since then.

A little friendly advice: I think you're trying way too hard to fit in around here. Everyone can tell you're obviously trying to kiss up to the mods/admins, and that will not get you accepted, so if you stopped with that, and bringing up trolling and spamming every third post, you'd be fine! Not ripping off other people's fanfics would help too. If you really paid attention to things around here, you'd realize that most other new users don't have the same problem with being accepted that you do, and that's for a reason. Like Jesty said, think before you post.

I've pmed you countless times, Clan, with nice, polite messages asking you to stop doing something, or telling you somethign you did wrong and showing that it's against the rules. After the fifth time of no response, I gave up. We were always tryign to help you become a better member, clan, but I've given up. So have many of the other people here. If you ever want to be a good member here, you'll have to listen a bit more to us when we try, or in my case, tried to help you, and put a little effort into becoming a better member. You're not gonna get anywhere with what you're doign right now.

When I was a n00b, I made my first topic. I had it locked. I was so traumatized, I asked Stu to delete it from the spamvault. I was too terrified to make another topic for almost 3 months.

This may just be me, but is this a good idea?

Y'know, if people just read the rules before posting, and then reading all the topics that help noobs, we wouldnt have these problems. Probably. Ok, let me rephrase that: If everybody read and abided by the rules, we wouldnt have these problems. And if he posted 100 times on the same day, I'm sure he was just a little over-enthusiastic. I read the rules, as I do in every forum. And spell out my words and check my mis-spellings. I deserve a trophy...Or a pizza... Maybe a pizza trophy!

Then you won the "countdown from 10,000" game, and you became loved and hated!..

I still owe you a sign pic from that, don't I?

Oh, and I do like the first idea, when newbs post in the "New Here?" thread, they get a warm welcome and its feels really nice. But, I believe personal threads arn't as much as a problem anymore.

Question! I am new, and I admit that I made too many new threads right off the bat. Is that a problem?

It is a problem, but not an uncommon one..
It's not as bad as reviving an old thread just to tell us.

Hey, I have a question, I'm now getting this "number of edits" thing beneath my posts, and I wasn't seeing these before now. Did I accidentally do something, other than edit?
