I don't know if this can be done on this forum, but it seems like a good idea, so many times words are mispelled. It would seem prudent to have a Spell Checker, I've see them on other forums... I hope this hasn't been suggested before... |

You can turn it into a poll! Just edit your first post and you will be given the option to turn it into a poll. |

It would make the forum a better place. Since so many people, including me, mispell a lot of words. It would allow people to ACTUALLY understand what people are saying. |

The real problem here is grammar, not spelling. You can misspell haf the words in a sentance and poeple will stil undurstand yoo. And there's no cure for bad grammer, except maybe the Grammar Stick. Not to mention the worst spelling offenders won't even use the spell-checker. |

Do you have any suggestions for a spell checker? I have already looked into spelling cow, and we have decided not to use that one (as it places ads which we have no control over). You can find more info/discussion about this in the forum suggestion thread. The easiest way that I know of to check your spelling is use a dictionary (there are several online free). Check out m-w.com or webster.com |

I like dictionary.com. But all of these are supereasy to use, especially if you use Firefox; you can just make a Quick Search bookmark. Whenever I want to look up a word, I just type, for example, "dict perspicacity" in a new tab. |

The problem with a spellchecker is, as has been brought up, the biggest offenders would probably be the ones least likely to use the feature. I do agree with bad grammar being a bigger problem than bad spelling anyway. I read somewhere once, I believe, that said that your ability to decipher words in a sentence hinges merely on looking at the first few and last few letters. So rioly, you coold tipe oot abstojte garrbge for setneces and it wuuld cume out preficatly leorgable. With grammar, though, it can be nightmarish, especially with people who don't seem to know what capitalization or punctuation are, resulting in text like "hey man whats up im doin pretty good over here say why dont we go 2 the store later and pick up some milk and maybe a magazine or maybe even a doughnut k seeya thx bye." (That's actually not too bad an example, but if I were to elaborate more my head would start to hurt.) So I guess the point I'm trying to make is, uh, bad grammar is... bad. |

True, I hadn't condsidered if the spell checker would even be used, but it just seemed like a good idea... |

Yes, that's true. Spelling isn't the problem here. Grammar is the real problem. Even if we do implement a spell checker, it would probably have to be phpSpell. You can probably find it at the MODs section on phpBB's Web site. I can't give anyone a link because Google's servers aren't working. w00t! 100 posts! My life is slowly disappearing!
