I'm all about the American WayTM of measuring things. And I'd really like somebody to tell me why I should think "It's easier to convert!" is a good reason. Whoop-de-crap. You just want easier homework.

I'm fine with using metric inside of calculations, and in data from sensors. In class and at work for work stuff. Computers naturally like metric better than imperial. Easier to code and all that.

But I'm talking in real life I don't see any way that metric is more convenient than the way I've done things my whole life. The conversion argument in real life is just dumb. The reason why no Americans are inconvenienced by the fact that a mile is 5280 feet is because you only have to convert that stuff in school! If you care how many miles away something is, you don't care about the feet. If you want to know how many feet tall something is, you don't care how many miles tall that converts to.

Dark Grapefruit has the only decent argument for celcius in the real world. If I had known that little area of warmth trick earlier, suddenly moving to celcius doesn't require me to divide 9 by 5 in my head.

I think metric and american (similar to imperial but not quite) are both very fine ways to measure things. But I don't think there are any significant real world advantages to switching a whole populace over if they are used to one or the other. If you think in metric, good on ya. If you think in feet and pounds and fahrenheit and cups and teaspoons, great. The "easier to convert" argument is pointless because you really don't convert all that often. I convert teaspoons to cups about as often as I convert seconds to days, and you metric people seem to deal with that okay.

On a sidenote I suppose there are some small advantages. For example, it would be cheaper to import cookbooks since you don't have to convert all the measurements and reprint. But you'll have that cost anyways as us Americans hate the way you brits spell things.

I like Imperial better because I'm filthy American swine. If I'm doing measurements for school/science, or whatever, I'll use metric, but otherwise I use Imperial.

I only put temperatures I've personally experienced. The only places in the world where it's ever 50 degrees are right on the equator. [s]Also I'm Teff.[/s]

Not really, most equatorial places only go into the mid-30's. Deserts are the only places that hit 50 or above.
