Other than being able to sing on-key, does the singer's voice matter?

Dude. Listen to any David Bowie song.

Then listen to blink-182.

Now, tell me, would you enjoy David Bowie songs with the singer from blink-182?

Yes, very much so. Strong example (made completely with my opinions, of course):

Nightwish vs. Coheed & Cambria. I prefer listening to Nightwish. If Taria Turunen (who's gone anyway :() wasn't awesome and Claudio Sanchez didn't sound like Patrick Stump, it'd totally be the other way around. And, of course, F-Merc is an excellent example.

P.S. I wouldn't enjoy Blink-182 songs with the singer from Blink-182, so that example is a little skewed. :P

Of course, Nightwish sucks. I mean, we bandy the word "Sucks" around like it's meaningless, but Nightwish genuinely sucks.

I wonder if Devil Worship has anything to do with it?

That's a nice hypothesis you have there, Ace. I agree.

Oh, well when it comes to Nightwish, Satan worship is a given.

No duh! Of course a singer's voice matters! I just think a little personal taste is a part of it, though. For me, I'm not too fond of singers with high voices (say, Axl Rose's voice...not that I don't enjoy the band's music as a whole, but his screechy voice is my least favorite part), or in worst case scenario...dudes with light, boybandy-pop-punk voices. AAAAAHHH!! I prefer it when the singer has a loud voice with a really good range; in other words he can sing, scream, rap (I'm not a rap kinda guy, but it can be cool when thrown into rock or metal), etc. in all manner of pitches. That's a reason Project 86 is my favorite band: All 3 core members are talented vocalists. Randy Torres has an excellent singing voice, Steven Dail can scream really well, and then Andrew Schwab, the lead singer, can do just about any kind of vocals awesomely.

Holy Crap. He did an EP with The Dillinger Escape Plan. Must hear.

Eh, I've never really cared for mathcore bands like TDEP, the harsh vocals are kind of a turn-off. But if anyone can improve the genre, it's Mike.

Also, check out Mr. Bungle (his main project) sometime. Pretty crazy stuff, they pretty much cover every genre possible. Maybe not the kind of stuff I'd listen to a whole album of, but it's good in small doses.
