| Post subject: | Is Poker a Sport? |
As of recent years , ESPN has been airing the World Series of Poker events on television, from the Texas Hold-'em main event to obscure Hi-Lo Omaha circuit events. As the debate still rages on, I would like to know your opinion. Is Poker a sport? Comments about other obscure competitions are also welcome, such as competitive eating, NASCAR, spelling bees, curling, etc. I believe that Poker is a sport, because it is very skillful and strategic. In addition, there is also a great risk of injury(paper cuts, falling out of chairs, etc). |

No, I wouldn't call it a sport. But I wouldn't call it a game either. T'is more like a challenge. |

I don't think it's a sport, persay, but it is certainly a game, and I think ESPN can show games as well as sports. |

Agreed with Tennybopper. ESPN has shown paintball, and thats not a sport (even though I think it is). |

I agree with Cyber too. It's not a sport. But it is a game. More or less, it's a game of skill, bluffing, and just pure dumb luck. Unless you know how to cheat (I DO! I DO!) then you have no control over what happens in the game. Even as a dealer. Note: I do know how to cheat at cards. Not that I will. I just like to learn slight of hand for the fun of it. It's interesting how you can palm off cards and such. I perform these 'cheats' as magic tricks. I know one trick where I can deal out six full houses, a three of a kind, and a straight flush (sometimes a royal flush if I'm lucky) from a cut deck. And I'd even let you cut it just to make everything authentic. |

Its a hobby sport. I'm not sure what NASCAR is though... (I know what it is... Just not what category.) |

I don't think it's a sport. But, like CT, it is a game, and ESPN can show games. Which is also the point when I change the channel. |

If you burn less then 50 calories during the course of the entire game, then it is not a sport. And no, playing poker while on the treadmill doesnt count, either. |

Poker, by the definition of sport on answers.com, is not a sport. It sure is a fun game, though. Auto racing (most forms of it, NASCAR included) is certainly a sport. It is quite physical, with a lot more exertion than one might think. Seriously, though, poker is a great game, but it's not a sport. Unless you're playing one of those games where you have to run between tables to get your cards or something like that. |
