Okay, after getting back from seeing Pan's Labyrinth (which I HIGHLY recommend, BTW), I wanted to know whether you guys prefer foreign movies dubbed or subtitled. Personally, I generally prefer subtitles--even though my eyes are drawn to the bottom of the screen a lot, I still prefer hearing the original actors' vocal inflections and stuff. |

Depends on the movie. If it's a Japanese monster movie, it's gotta be dubbed. If it's any other movie, then it depends. Hero is a movie that I'd like to have dubbed, just so I don't have to keep my eyes on the bottom of the screen. |

Subbed. There's less chance of the dialouge being changed significantly to match the mouth flaps. |

Subtitled are what I usually prefer. Anime wise, the dubbed version is usually toned down, and sometimes can get the words incorrect on what the sentence is actually supposed to be. |

Definitely subtitled. Dubbing doesn't usually work very well. |

Subtitled. Almost always. It's weird when I think of movies I like that are subtitled, I actually remember what they say, but I remember it as english, even though it's still their voices... Weird... |

ah, banana oil. I was surprised and amused when i found out godzilla was dubbed not based on what they said or anything that would make sense, but what fit their lips the best. Did they think people would believe they really said that? |

Pans Labyrinth is in a different language??!?! It's a movie from Spain...with Spanish actors (save for the title character, oddly enough, who is American and had to learn all his lines phonetically), a Mexican director/writer, and Spanish crew. Yes, it's in Spanish (quite a gorgeous language, if you ask me, phonetically speaking). |

Being a fan of Anime, I have seen some really bad dubbing. It would have made things better just to have added English Subtitles. |

Wow...I had no idea this poll would be so one-sided. I'd honestly like to hear some arguments for dubbed versions myself...though the only thing I can think of is people not wanting to focus on the bottom portion of the screen throughout most of the film. I know my boyfriend hates subtitles, because he "hates reading movies." |

dubbing is only good if you happen to end up sitting in the very front of a movie theater--you don't want subtitles then. |

Dubbed for the most part. Yeah, I understand the whole idea of original actors' influcation of words and messed up sentences and stuff, but I don't like reading movies and I want to listen to something that's in my own language. |

I completely agree with him, PMG. I go to movies to watch them, not read them. If I want to read, I'll get a book. The movies look better in them, anyway. Of course, I DO usually prefer subtitled movies over poorly dubbed ones (except for the "monster movies" I mentioned in the earlier posts). If a movie is dubbed very well (eg. the meaning of the lines is correct, and they didn't just try to translate the words in the line and the acting is good), then I will usually like it more than a subtitled one, just because I can pay more attention to the movie. |

any american-made movie done in a foreign language should be subbed, definately. Because the main reason it's in that language and not just translated into English before filming is so you can tell the difference between different languages. eg The Passion (i never saw it, just using it as an example) had to be not english and then subbed so you know when they're talking hebrew, aramaic, latin, etc. |

I can understand that bit, but the basic premise of this thread wasn't for movies from your country, mostly in your native tongue, that have moments that are in a foreign language...the premise was for completely foreign films speaking their original language. As for native movies with moments of foreign language, I've even seen some get away with not translating at all, though you still get the gist of what's going on. I think the beginning of U-571 was this way, with the German language (though I can't recall if that was subbed or not...it's been a while since I saw it). |
