And math classes are unfair to students who are bad at math! Gasp! And PE is unfair to fat kids (like me)! This is just another wrong way of trying to make underachievers feel good by telling them that they're smarter than they really are. I remember when "A" used to mean "superiorily exceeds expectations" instead of just "meets expectations" (which is what it seems to mean now, whereas "C" is what used to be "meets expectations").

Seeing as how I've made it to the county spelling bee twice and placed both times AND made it again this year, I think it's fairly obvious that I'm a pretty darn good speller. ;)

Also, Word has horrible spellcheck.

I'm well-aware at how crappy Word's spellchecker is. It would take me minutes before I had the right combination of letters to tell that thing what I wanted to spell!

I know how you feel! Usually my spelling is close enough that Word knows what I mean, but sometimes it's arglebargle-inducing.

I think the change there came from parents ("WHAT DO YOU MEAN MY KID ISN'T AN A STUDENT! THEY'LL NEVER GET INTO <semi-prestigious school name> NOW!!").

I do like your idea that they're trying to make underachievers feel better than they are, and I think there's really something to it. My former high school gives out far too man A's. Some stats that back that claim up: Average (weighted) GPA of students taking the ACT- 4.0, Average ACT score- 19. Average GPA of entire school- 3.0 (and the school's standardized test scores certainly do not reflect that).
