I'd say indie, ska and punk are my favorites.

Rock, Punk, and Metal. I know, nothing out of the rock type area. But I like almost all music, really.

I don't get why you have "emo" and "screamo" as two seperate genres but lump all rock into 1 genre. :/

Anyway, rock, electro, and funk, I guess. Jazz being a close fourth.

In hindsight I probably should've stuck emo with punk. I could've squeezed in another genre.



Pff, what? Got a problem with creating a word to describe a certain sound so you can say things like "I like ska" instead of saying "I like the style of music characterized by an accent on the off beat and usually has a horn section to usually accompany bass, drums and guitar."?

Indie covers most of the bands I like, which is mostly really just pop. And then I picked emo for Sunny Day Real Estate, Fugazi, and Rites of Spring.

I hate genres because nobody can ever totally agree on what defines a genre, and because any polls like this or discussions with people about what genres they like always involve a mixture of almost-meaningless catch-all genres such as "rock" with ridiculously specific sub-genres like goregrind or something.
I mean, on this poll there's about six genres that, to some people, could pretty much be considered subgenres of rock. At the same time, we have a single genre for jazz, completely ignoring its own myriad styles and subgenres, and an option for "screamo", which depending who you ask currently seems to cover any band ever that has used screaming. And how about the punk option? What are we talking about here? Sex Pistols or Green Day? How many times have I heard that argument, eh?

It's hard to fit every genre into fifteen options. I had to make some compromises and have rock, grunge or alt-rock sounding genres in one option. I also didn't feel right about skipping over some of the popular tiny genres like noisecore.



I wouldn't say six. I would say that eleven-ish genres in the list could be considered subgenres of blues.



Again, I only had fifteen slots so people have to lump their preferred genre into the closest similar genre they can find. I think it's safe to say screamo can encompass any song with screaming in it. And, once again, with punk you'd have to lump all of your similar genres into punk (laptop punk, hobo punk, crust punk, pop punk, anarcho punk, folk punk, and so on, not enough room in the list). So Six Pistols and Green Day would both be grouped under punk.

Yeah, fair enough with the 15 options limit, but for one thing I don't think any size poll could contain enough genre options to properly represent everybody and also I'm not just talking about this poll; I'm talking about discussing genres in general.
The thing about popular tiny genres is kindof subjective too, I mean who would you say noisecore is popular with? It's certainly not a mainstream genre, and there are plenty of other genres with a similar or larger following that you haven't mentioned. It's pretty much all down to which niche group of music fans one finds oneself exposed to.

And regarding screamo: I don't know where this universal screaming rule came from, but Wikipedia disagrees.

I chose Rock, Pop, and Metal. Those pretty much cover 95% of the music I listen to regularly.

I'm a bit disappointed nothing resembling "country" is on there, even though I'm probably the only one who would choose it and there's things I just can't stand that would be classified as "country", but it's the closest thing I can think of to describing a lot of the music I like.

If I had to choose a genre as my favourite type of music, I'd probably say post-rock. Which is kindof a good choice 'cause it's a pretty vague one that covers a whole crapton of bands I like. I couldn't live on post-rock alone though. Sometimes, Godspeed and Cult of Luna and stuff can get a little weighty. Then it's time to break out the Hanson. Hoo yeah.

I always get paralyzed when I have to choose pretty much my favorite ANYTHING.

This is no exception.

Indie isn't really a genre, but ok.
I was hoping this poll would be one option and more general, i.e Rock, Pop, Metal, Classical, Jazz, Ska, Electronic, Rap, R'n'B/Soul, Other. Because no matter how much you argue, I'm pretty sure everything falls under those somewheres.

Anyways, I said Rock (my main one), Indie and Jazz.

My top four would be Alternative, Indie, Punk, and Ska. Ska is more of a specific option than my other three choices, so it got dropped. Also, Screamo could have easily fit under emo, and then emo under punk.

I went with rock, metal and techno/electronica/trance/psytrance. I would've said indie and rap/hip-hop too but there's only three options and you gotta make cuts. When I was younger I would've said punk but I've kind of matured away from punk. That's not saying all you juys who listen to punk are immature, that's just saying it doesn't have the same appeal to me anymore.

My poll could've definitely been better layed out. If I could edit it I would probably change things to

Country, Punk, Rock, Pop, Metal, Classical, Jazz, Ska, Electronic, Rap/Hip-Hop, R'nB'/Soul (as Sean suggested) and then deviate into some more specific-but-still-kind-of-general genres.



Indie Rock and Indie Pop? But, yeah, it could've been mushed into Rock/Alt-Rock.

Ska was invented by people who took Band in school and wanted to be in a "real" band but couldn't play guitar or drums.
