Um I think he's real in the strips. I think though when other people se him he like becomes in-animate. How could he do all these things?

From what I remember Watterson saying in the 10th anniversary book, Hobbes was meant as a representation of how the way Calvin perceives reality in contrast to the way adults (primarily his parents) perceive it. Or something to that effect.

Anyway, I don't think he becomes inanimate when others see him, it just depends on the point of view being expressed in the strip.

So, while the real answer would be "it depends on whether you're Calvin," I just voted for "Maybe."

You're not the boss of me now, and you're not so big! :p Sorry... I'm done.

But, I've thought about this... It's never really clear. Maybe.

Since I haven't read too many Calvin and Hobbes comics, I just put the answer "I don't know". However, after remembering about that Robot Chicken episode and reading the above comic, I'll say that Hobbes is not real.

HAHAHAHAHA! That's nice.

I'm rather immune to sad emotions.

*teardrop*

Yeah, Hobbes is purely in Calvin's head.

Hobbes isn't real; Calvin just imagines him to be so.

That's why when other people see him, it's just a stuffed tiger, right?

Hah, I feel awful.

If you're Calvin, then Hobbes is as real as Spaceman Spiff.

I've seen that everywhere, but I still wonder if that was ever real or not.

That doesn't look remotely like Bill Watterson did it. It's not his lettering style, and Calvin holding the pencil looks soooo fake. The cartoon also lacks Watterson's signature.

What he said.

Also, wow. They didn't even bother putting the right name on there. Didn't notice that before...

Hobbes' reality is a function of the observer. It's just a coincidence that the only observer that fully sees that reality is Calvin. But there are definitely strips in which things occur that couldn't have happened if Hobbes wasn't real. I vote "maybe" with a strong lean toward "yes"

Now, see, that's what we'd call a forgery. I reckon they purposely left out the sig so folk wouldn't start thinkin' it were a real comic, ya see.

I think that's intentional.

When I think of this question, I think about the story line where Calvin goes forward in time to when he's written a paper for school, and take it back to the present so he won't have to write it (I think it was in the book "Scientific Progress Goes 'Boink'"). If Hobbes isn't real, then Calvin might actually have some serious mental condition. Think about it: in that story line, if Hobbes isn't real, Calvin would have to pretend he went to the future, talked to himself, went back in time to an hour previous, talk to another one of himself, have a fight between the three of himself, then he would have to set up a conversation between two Hobbeses, in which they make fun of him and write a story doing the same, then go to school, and read the paper that he wrote in the guise of the two Hobbeses, and then act completely surprised by it.

Not to say that that story line wasn't awesome or anything, but if that's what happened then... well, yeah.
