Drums: Everybody wants to play 'em and I don't see why.

The problem with drums is that, frankly, they pretty much all sound the same; to the point that most bands can replace their drummer with a drum machine and nobody can really hear the difference. There needs to be more innovation in drumming...Unusual time signatures, different forms of percussion, electronic drum pads, etc.

Good examples of creative, underrated drummers: Morgan Agren and Bill Bruford. Oh yeah, and while you're at it, John Stanier.

Whoever drummed for Smashing Pumpkins was a very unique drummer, along with the Rush guy.

That was Jimmy Chaimberlain (sp?). And yeah he's good. So is Stewart Copeland.

It is among the best, but when people don't shut up about it...

That's pretty much the definition of "overrated".

Not necessarily. It doesn't bother me that people think guitar is great, it's just all these people that want to learn to play guitar because everyone thinks it's so cool.

Actually, with good-enough tweaking on a good drum machine, you can get some pretty awesome sounds. The old-school Roland TR-808 has been used in hip-hop, electro and synthpop for years and years. And newer models can emulate older ones.

And if you want awesome percussion: Blue Man Group. \o/ \o/ \o/

Well yeah, but there's no real skill in using a drum machine...even if they can emulate live drums pretty well, it just doesn't have the same effect.
