Other than being able to sing on-key, does the singer's voice matter?

Yes, singing is very important in defining a band's sound. Freddy Mercury is a good example, but even if they aren't a fantastic singer, such a Bob Dylan (disputable) or Billy Corgan (indisputable), they have a unique sound that is instantly recognisable.
Also, just think, if you had a mediocre guitarist, who was a great singer, they'd sound more original than if they were good at guitar and a boring singer.
Though, on the other hand, someone who can prove me wrong is, of course, Jack White. But let's just forget about him. He;s a unique singer as well I guess.
I, personally, prefer great singing in a song over anything else, except maybe lyrics.

(Woah, that's a cornucopia or commas, there)

IMO, instrumental skill is probably the most important thing in a song, but singing matters too. An annoying singer can pretty much ruin the rest of the band.

Singing is of major importance. If Rihanna did Tom Waits karaoke, there's going to be a difference.

I pretty much agree with Homerun. Yes, the singer's voice does matter, but it's not as important as instrumental skill.

As long as it's not all annoying and monotonous like Radiohead it's ok.

Srsly guise. Think.

Dead Kennedys. Sex Pistols.

Jello Biafra had one of the weirdest voices I've ever heard, and Johnny Rotten was just plain annoying, but these are some great bands. Singer's voice don't matter none.

Would you enjoy the Sex Pistols as much if Kelly Clarkson was singing the songs? It's certainly not the complicated music that makes you like them. It's a band's whole image, which a singer greatly contributes to.

Severe toastpaint, we need to get this back on track.

And a signers voice does matter, you wouldn't want an emotionless voice in a pop song.

Of course the singer's voice matters. Singing is literally half of what makes up a band's sound. You can always notice when a band changes their singer, and sometimes the whole sound changes.

I can't comprehend anything they put out.

Singer's voice matters. A lot. I don't think I'd enjoy Ozzy as much if he sounded like the guy from Journey.

Singing voices are important. They are an integral part of the music.

Would you want to hear someone like, oh, say, Ramrod singing Aretha Franklin songs? Probably not!

Ramrod, if you record RESPECT and upload it, I will drive to your house on Wednesday and give you five dollars. And then knock you out.

Dude. Listen to any David Bowie song.

Then listen to blink-182.

Now, tell me, would you enjoy David Bowie songs with the singer from blink-182?
