So, I decided to weigh my backpack before because it was basically killing my shoulder and it came out to be around 21 lbs. So, my question is, how heavy is the backpack you lug to school every day?

I've never weighed mine, but I'm guessing it's something about 20 pounds or so with books, notebooks, etc..

I carry that, plus a Trogdor bag that I use as a laptop case. I took the bag and added some padding to make it a nice lappy bag.

I don't carry mcuh in my backpack, because we have this thing called "Binder Buddy". It's a binder that's two binders, and all of our homework, packets of things, and usually ntoes go in there, so that's pretty heavy.

My backpack is at least 10 lbs. Some kids can get scoleosis (SP?) from a backpack like that.

Nah.
The only homework I'd get would be Algebra homework.

Mine depends, I only pack the stuff I need in the day.
Usually around 5/10 lbs. But on wednesday, Rugby. 24 lbs.
Trainers, big bag in a bag and notebooks, planner and pencils.
Trust me it's heavier than it sounds.

Mine depends on how much I get. Some days I won't have much, others I'll have a lot. Usually it weighs 16-20 lbs.

I'll weigh it the next time I get a ton of homework.

As a way to regulate my backpack weight, I stick everything in one binder, and carry it around everywhere. I mean everywhere. It must way at least 10 Lbs alone, what with 2 binders, a spanish textbook, an assignment pad, various folders and notebooks and a TON of paper. With my SS book which won't fit (dang) it;s usually round 20lbs.

I don't have a bookbag anymore since I'm college. I have my The Cheat messenger bag. But back when I did, it was heavy, let me tell you that.

Mine is really heavy (not sure about the exact weight), but it doesn't bother my back for some reason. Maybe I have a strong back or something.

Don't know. Luckily, it's a rolling backpack, so I only have to carry it down the stairs to the car in the morning and up the stairs to my house when I get home. It's relatively heavy, I guess.

I'm in college. I live close enough to my uni to commute every day. However, unlike most commuters, I don't have a car of my own, so I literally have to carry everything at all times. My big physics text book, about 8 or so paperbacks (for my other classes), folders, notebooks, countless papers and packets.

I have to have a rolling backpack because my back hasn't been the same since a car crash in May '01. They don't make rolling backpacks large enough for a college student so frequently I have to carry items under my arm or tucked in my messenger bag/purse combo.

I look like a refugee clomping from class to class.

What happened in the car crash?

My dad was driving me to school--I was in the back seat reaching forward to grab something from the front seat. We were at a stop light and we were rear-ended by another car that didn't stop on time. The impact sort of snapped my neck back. I wasn't seriously hurt at the time but it was enough to warrant an ambulance ride.
I had some damage to my neck and spine, some of which didn't surface until weeks later. At first it was just my neck that hurt a little bit (I wore a neck-brace for three weeks after the accident), but then lower portions of my back began to tighten up and really hurt. Sometimes it got so bad that I could barely lift myself from a lying-down, to a sitting, to standing position. Walking also became difficult because my back and hip muscles were so stiff. The good part was that I didn't have to take gym for the rest of the year, and well into the next year!

Most of the injury healed itself within 8 or 9 months or so, but whiplash is one of those things that never quite goes away. I'm pretty much 100% normal now--I really only feel it when the weather changes. In any case I take measures to not aggravate it.

Wow, that's a little long-winded for an answer...but let this be a lesson to all you kiddies out there! Wear your seatbelt!

Mine weighed in at about 46 lbs. I'm glad that I have one of those ones on wheels...

As I said before in this thread, my school has this big binder that's two bgi bindrs in one, where all of our homeowrk and packets go. That weighed 12 pounds. Adding the weight of my backpack, which I would say is about 5, I carry 17 pounds. Not too bad. We only have one textbook that we have to take to school, whcih is our Spanish book. The others stay at home or at school.

Well, the wheels and the contraption might make it a lot heavier.

My backpack isn't even a pound today, because I have no homework over break. And even when I do have homework, I keep everything in one binder, so that's all I take home.

CR - I unloaded all of it's content... and it came to that weight. The backpack itself weighs about 6 lbs. So that makes a total of 52 lbs.

Heh, I was tested for that. Apparently my spine is about 5 degrees off or summat.

Meh.

I really don't know how heavy my backpack is.

That is, indeed, true. That is one of the reason why those wheeled backpacks are starting to be pushed more and more.

Mine's 15.5 kilos on tuesdays. That's 34.17 lbs.

In first class of high school, our backpacked weighed 16 kg (35.27 lbs), my girlfriend weighed 34 kg (74.96 lbs). That's not healthy.

due to the effects of hurricane katrina, the only thing i carry in my backpack is:

a folder, no more than one notebook, two calculators (only every other day) and a pen and pencil. and a planner.

definately only about 1 pound.

nice.

The most mine can ever weigh (with absolutely all my school equipment in it) is something like 60 pounds. On average, I usually only have a few books and notebooks home, so around 25 pounds.

Well, I don't currently use my current bookbag for school purposes (seeing as I'm not taking any classes right now), but for old cassette tapes and notebooks of mine, and right now it's around 10 pounds, so I voted that. I'd imagine with an average amount of books it'd be closer to 20 though.
