Simple question. Do you believe in hypnotism? I'm pretty convinced that there's some basis for it, since I went to a hypnotism show a while ago and my best friend went up and got himself zoned good. Also, I can sort of hypnotize myself: I can make myself feel like I'm rocking back and forth on a swing while I'm lying down.

So, TWUT!

A lot of the shows are a bit much, but I saw a really incredible one at my school's Project Grad. Hypnotism is real, though, even though the shows are sometimes staged. We read about it a bit in psychology last semester.

Sure you can. My mum quit smoking thanks to hypnotism!

I'd love to experience it. But I've never see it or anything, so I really have absolutely no idea. If it's true or not. Oh... I suppose it's possible.

Yeah, I've seen it happen to volunteers in a show, and I doubt all of them were faking it. It's pretty weird, though.

No, I am skeptic at best. All it is, is some guy getting you into a very relaxed and dreamy state. Most people hypnotized will just make up things in order to please the hypnotizer. That's what I think.

You know, I seriously don't think anyone actually gets hypnotised by those stage shows. They probably just play a long with it, as Lu Bu has said.

That's the basic idea presented in the hypnotism episode of Penn & Teller's show on Showtime that has a name that I can't type here for vulgarity purposes.

I'm skeptical of it, but I've seen it happen.

I'm not really sure. I mean, I kinda believe in it, but I've never seen it happen to anyone, and when I see shows about it, I tend to think that the 'volunteers' are just acting.

You are right, most of those shows are actually faked. But hypnosis is real.

I'm an expert on Hypnotism. I did a reaserch paper on it once. The basic reason most people don't believe in Hypnotism is because they believe that you can be hypnotised without willing to, which sounds stupid. It is. That is impossible. You have to be willing to get hypnotised to get hypnotised. Also a myth is the "Instant hypnosis" that you see all the time on TV. Even with stage shows, they have to get prepped for hours before the show to be able to get sent to sleep so quickly by the hypnotist. You also are not suggestable enough to do whatever the guy says during hypnosis, your subconsious is simply more open, so you can remember long lost memories or get told to quit smoking. You can't do anything that would normally be against your morals, such as harming yourself. I know way too much about this stuff.

So, it is real, but not as fantasticly mystical as some people think.

I've heard that you can put yourself into a hypnotic state when doing things like driving long distances and such. Is this true?

Self-hypnosis isn't anything special. It's how time passes more quickly when you're sucked into a televison program or a really good book or the road in front of you. It's not real hypnosis, per-se.

Wait...you're not saying that you're an expert simply because of one research paper, are you? I'm not dismissing the information you provided--it was very valid--but I think nearly all public grade schools in America require students to write at least one research paper at some point, so I don't see how writing a research paper makes anyone an expert on anything. My research paper was about the history of magic as an art of illusion--but by no means do I declare myself an expert on the subject.

That was simply an example. I've done quite a bit of studying on the subject, and I consider myself quite knowledgeble on the subject. I really didn't want to use the word "Expert", but I couldn't think of another word that would take less time to type.

I suppose that "very knowledgeble" would've worked.

That's not really actually hypnosis. The term is simply "Highway hypnosis". It is a type of trance, but not really hypnosis.

i suppose it's what you think of hypnotism. when you think about "you are getting sleepy" type stuff, it doesn't seem true. but when you think of like, trauma relief, that's possible.
i heard there was a woman who needed a serious operation, but was allergic to anaesphetic(sp?) so they hypnotised her to stop feeling pain.
well, those are my thoughts. you owe me a penny.

I've hypnotized various people. There was a scientist before the days of anesthetic who hypnotized his patients before starting surgical procedures. Yeah, I'd say it works. Just not in the classic mind-control sort of way. Hypnotism just increases the power of suggestion, and you can't force anyone to do what they don't want to do.

Well, in Driver's Ed, I've glimpsed at a page that had a paragraph or two on Highway Hypnotism. So, yeah. I believe it. All it is, in my opinion, is wanted drowsiness.

As stated above, highway hypnotism isn't hypontism, it's just a trance. SOmewhat similar to hypnotism, but not the real thing.
