Post subject:  What was the best era of music?
So what do you guys think the best era of music was?

I'm going to have to say the 1960's was the best. People just seemed to be endlessly bursting with creative song ideas back then. Also, the 60's is the era of The Beatles, so that alone makes it my favourite musical era.

The 70's was great as well though!

Too bad the excellence of music has diminished since then. That's why I hope Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr will continue to produce music as long as they can stand on two legs. Oldies fans like us still need their music around to keep us sane.

Speaking of which, buy Paul McCartney's 2005 album Chaos & Creation In The Backyard. It's awesome!

I didn't vote.

My music tastes go into all sorts of era's. From the early 15th century, to the modern world today.

To me, music will never have a golden age. It doesn't matter to me what period it was, as long as I like it. The situation is, I like artists who sometimes have a few centuries apart from one another.

I think there needs to be an "other" option.

1970, Punk, Primal Rock, Metal it all started in that decade. %)'s behind that then 60's.

Hmm...this is hard. I like music from all times. I seem to like 80s music, but there's also music I like from the 70s and 90s. A couple of songs nowadays are good, but there's too much rap around.

I agree, there's some great music from every era. But, call me stupid and naive, but I think the 00's have the best. I mean, most of the music on the mainstream isn't great, but there's some really great undiscovered and indie stuff that is, in my opinion, better than the Beatles could ever be.

The eighties and early nineties signaled the start of one of the best eras - the eras where no teenage idiots will sing along and ruin your favorite songs - they're listening to crap like Daniel Powter and Ne-Yo! No longer did you have to deal with hearing your favorite songs butchered by the radio: good music was labled "alternative," and moved to stations that didn't have to follow regulations. Grunge transitioned the music world, and some of the best bands came out if it. I picked the eighties, for Doolitle and Surfer Rosa, for They Might Be Giants, and for The Jesus and Mary Chain, and God's gift to the world: shoegaze.

Um... I hate to burst your bubble, but Heavy Metal actually originated in the 1960's. It became popular in the 70's, but originated in the 60's, so that era deserves credit for the formation of Heavy Metal.

Think of it this way :
The 60's brought us a Revolution, with the Beatles sweeping the world.
The 70's Gave us Punk Rock. Can anyone say "The Ramones"?
The 80's Gave us Some good things, like Ozzy and Metalica. It also gave us some really bad things, like hair bands and God awful pop songs. We can call a Mulligan on that.
The 90's gave us Grunge. Stone Temple Pilots, Green Day, and most importantly, Nir-freaking-vana.
This brings us to the present. While we have shows dedicated to finding bands and singers, we can't truely say whether it's better than the style of music years ago. We have to wait. Only time will tell.

Why is no one acknowlodging the 50's? The Birth of Rock'n'roll. Chicago Blues began. We had the beginnings and influences of punk (Link Wray) Metal (Muddy Waters played a major part in Zeps sound) Modern Rockabilly, and Good old Rock'n'Roll.

(AND I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT ELVIS!)

Although I love classic rock, I'ma say the 90's. This was the great outburst of punk and ska music. There is also a lot of great bands that played during the era, such as Guns 'N Roses and Nirvana. Also, some of my favorite bands came from then, such as Green Day, System of a Down, Blink 182, and Goldfinger.

I so agree with you, Code J. I think this what defines this decade musically - most of the stuff on the radio and MTV and other mainstream places suck majorly, but go just a little underground and you'll find really, really awesome stuff. :)

Also, I don't mean to engage in flag-waving here, but I think the Canadian music scene these days is producing the best music it has in years. Artists and groups like Feist, Stars, Buck 65, Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, the New Pornographers and Destroyer more than make up for the tripe like *Celine Dion* we've foisted on the rest of the world! :)

Anyway, this is going way off topic, but why hasn't anyone agreed on a name for this decade other than "the 2000's"? I mean, it's four years to the end and we're still calling this decade "the 2000's" - that's just stupid... :rolleyes:

You know, I'd really like to see more people calling this decade "the aughts", really I do. ;)
