I have always been bothered which one of these is the best. Great escape has something that actualy happened, not to mention the get in your head whistling. Saving Private Ryan has its great opening and ending scence plus accuracy and realism, something the great escape lacks. And arabia is great for being so different. Not only did it take place in Africa, not Europe, it wasnt WW2. OMG times 2!!! |

To be honest, I haven't seen any of those movies. Although one war movie that I did see (as it was part of my history class) was Patton. Now that was a movie. |

I can name three War movies that are far superior to those: Apocolyspe Now, Patton and Platoon. |

None of them I'm afraid. My favorite anti-war movie is Grave of of the Fireflies. And none other. |

Yarr - plus Full Metal Jacket too. But The Great Escape is a quality film as well. (Though is it technically a war film? Yeah, it's set in a POW camp and all, but we don't actually see any war, really.) |

I'm surprised no one has said this : Paths of Glory. And I completely agree with Alec on the ground that anti-war is definitely better than war, and I can see where you're going. I'd rather have peace any day, but I'd rather not sit through a movie about staring at non-polluted grass and watching crickets chirp, if you get my drift. |

Hmm, I'd agree there. Which means that I prefer war films made during and after the Vietnam conflict. They're aaaallll anti-war. |

Great Escape is awesome... My personal favorite, though, is We Were Soldiers... Even thought it has Mel Gibson in it, it's still totally wow... The fact it's based on real events makes it even better. It's pretty gritty, though, not for the faint of heart. |

I still have to see Saving Private Ryan and Lawrence of Arabia. Or Saving Ryans Privates and Lawrence of Alabia. So I'ma say The Great Escape. (Heh, I have said "I'ma" three times in about 5 posts.) |
