Post subject:  Wearing helmets: Helpful or unnecessary?
Do you think that wearing helmets are useful or waste? I think it's useful to prevent any head injury.

Wearing a helmet is like wearing a seatbelt. It's stupid not to.

Of course, it also depends on what you're talking about. I think you'd be safe to watch TV without a helmet on.

On a bike it is good. Unless you're in the Tour De France, you are probably safe then, but I think it's regulation that they do.

a helmet probably saved my health once... i stuck my foot in the spokes of my bike once while going 30mph down a steep hill and flipped, landing directly on my head. It was kind of cool doing a somersault like that, but had I not been wearing a helmet I would have been in the hospital. Needless to say, I was pretty dazed from the incident even with a helmet on.

But if you ride in a place with alot of traffic, and don't wear a helmet, I suggest you read Mick Harte was Here by Barbara Park.

It compares for me.

I live in an area that can either be very busy sometimes, and other times very quiet.

And it compares to what sort of terrian your on. If it's a more level area then I wouldn't say so, but if it's a more hilly terrian then yes.

Not wearing the helmet didn't cause the accident. It DID, more than likely, contribute to the fact that it messed up his face pretty bad.

Yeah, helmets are very unhelpful. To me, anyway. I mean, who falls off their bicycles nowadays? Little kids? N00bs? If you're pwnsome enough, you can just not fall off and you're okay. Image

[s]Sometimes[/s] usually (in the case of bikes) the crash isn't your fault though. Like that one thing Jones said (gah I can't stand those drivers -- they suck up a gallon of gas every 12 miles anyways).

I don't care how good of a rider you are, you're not going to be able to avoid a giant SUV trucking along full speed at you. You'll get it, and what's the best way to avoid brain damage?

A helmet.

Why would you ever think of that? Not wearing any helmets would cause a severe head damage and may lead to death.

they saved my life once *cue ripply flashback thingy* I was camping and went swimming in a nearby lake so I took my watch off and set it on a rock, later at the campsite I relized I forgot it so I put on a helmet and got on my stupid little scooter and rode to the lake. Then I slipped because I was wet and I hit my head so hard on a rock that it cracked the helmet *back to present* I shudder to think what would happen it I wasnt wearing a helmet then.

I almost always wear a helmet, because frankly, I've needed it quite a few times. Animals like to get in my way, and don't like to move, thus, I start to move, and what do I get for my good deed? I get thrown in to a ditch. Some karma...

However, biking on a dead end street, I don't see much of a need to wear a helmet...

Let's give an unnessessary explanation of my neighborhood before I explain my helmet preference. It's on a hill, and there are four streets that lead on to the main road. I live near the top of one of these roads. There are two loops, each with very sharp turns and on a nasty slants. There's sand at almost every turn, and thick sand at that. Once, I had an incident where I was flung from my bike and slid on the ground on my stomach for four feet. After the advice of one of my friends, "Maybe we should go home," I was bandaged over eleven times. I didn't need to go to the hospital, but if I hadn't been wearing my helmet, I would have suffered much worse consequences. Please, wear a helmet.

Ah, this one time I was riding WAY too fast and I hit something on the ground, sped out of control, and hit this low, 2 foot high brick wall really fast. My bike flipped over, and I got sent doing a front flip over the handlebars onto the pavement, and I landed on my sholder and head.

Man, that was awesome.
I mean....wear a helmet.

I remember one time myself and friends were going off this dirt ramp, trying to see who could get the most air. While doing mine though I pulled up too hard on the handlebars and flipped backwards. I wasn't wearing my helmet, so instead I put my left arm behind my head to take the damage. I sprained my arm pretty bad. It was right before Freshman year of Highschool to, just a few days before the beginning of practice for Football.

I was lucky then, because I made a quick decision. If I wore my helmet though, I wouldn't have injured myself as badly.

Helmets are good. They keep you not dead.
Though I definately prefer not wearing a helmet while riding a bike. I mean I do, but I would rather not.
